Rhythms in the North

Utepils 225 Thomas Ave N, Minneapolis

Every year, on June 21st, when many cultures around the world are celebrating summer (or winter) solstice, France and many countries make music: people celebrate ''Fête de la musique'', also known in English as International Music Day. It's an annual music celebration to enjoy the longest day of the year. Musicians of every style and ability gather to perform for free in public spaces and parks. Aimed at all audiences, this day of celebration familiarizes people of all ages and all walks of life with a range of musical expressions. This year, Alliance Française, the French Cultural Center in Minneapolis is partnering with Douala Soul Collective to bring this event to the Twin Cities and around the State of Minnesota! We're giving life to this event through venues and spaces with several musicians and bands performing in small and larger places, reunited under ONE BIG MULTI-LOCATION FESTIVAL, called ''Rhythms in the North''. Stay tuned for musical lineup! This event is free to attend and open to all ages.

You should come and hear them. And you’re right, it’s not an orchestra. More like a banjo-harp-gentle-rockin-happy machine. They don’t know what to call it, but they want everyone to know about it. The music has a lot of light in it. They try to play beautiful songs from all eras. Plus a ton of Matt’s own songs dating from the beginning of his songwriting quest right up to the present. Quillan Roe of The Roe Family Singers, Matt Wilson, Jacques Wait who touches all music in Minneapolis, and harpist Phala Tracy. Christy Costello is a mover and a shaker in the Twin Cities Music Scene. She’s a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, disc jockey, talent buyer, promoter, mother, and yogi. Hailing from the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota, she is no stranger to the great outdoors. Her music blends the ferocity and rawness of nature’s elements, the new and exciting energy of a house show, mixed with the adrenaline rush of an all-night downtown disco. Her first-rate songwriting has been showcased in previous bands like Pink Mink and Ouija Radio, as well as her raw and unforgettable stage performances in Monica LaPlante, Butchers Union, The Von Bondies, and Extraterrestrials. This is Christy’s turn to step to the front. Christy’s current lineup includes Monica LaPlante (bass), Orion Treon (guitar/synth), Austin Cecil (drums), and Matt Pahl (sax/auxiliary instrumentation). The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers. —– The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show! This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
