Sparkling Enchanting Jazz BluLuna was formed by four veteran musicians driven by their love for the myriad genres of jazz, refusing to limit themselves to a single branch of the music. By focusing on familiar melodic compositions, this open-minded approach allows them to explore fresh and vibrant ideas, honoring the vast range of America’s first original sonic art form. The result is a remarkably warm delivery of a strong yet delicately nuanced mélange of enchanting moments. Dean Magraw: GuitarRick Carlson: PianoSteve Pikal: BassJay Epstein: Drums Dean Magraw studied at the University of Minnesota and Berklee College of Music in Boston. He spent five years in Beantown, playing professionally and teaching. After returning to his hometown St. Paul, he’s had a life of music – playing, composing, arranging, producing, & recording. Magraw’s music is impossible to pigeonhole. For 15 years, he was half of a duo with mandolinist Peter Ostroushko. He has collaborated with Masahiro Nitta, who plays the traditional Japanese shamisen; with Nigel Kennedy, Britain’s bad boy of the classical violin; with Nirmala Rajasekar, South Indian vocalist and player of the vina; with the singers Bruce Henry, Ruth MacKenzie, and Claudia Schmidt; with the Irish supergroup Altan. The opening set showcases Joel Shapira on guitar paired with Larry McDonough on piano, reprising their sublime duo tribute to jazz greats Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Vocalist Charmin Michelle then joins the duo to recreate tunes by Monk, Porter, Holiday, Horace Silver and more. Expect beautiful harmonies,, romantic melodies and swinging classics. He was with Prince during The New Power Generation era and played with him live and on albums for seven years. From 1995 to 1997, Bland, along with Sonny Thompson, recorded and played live with French pop star France Gall—they appear on one studio album and two live albums. In 2010, Bland became a member of Nick Jonas & the Administration (a side project of Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers) along with other former members of The New Power Generation and keyboardist Tommy Barbarella. He worked with Vulfpeck playing drums on “Hero Town,” which was released October 2017. Michael is also the current Drummer for Soul Asylum Tommy Barbarella – is an American keyboardist he was a member of The New Power Generation, Prince’s recording and stage band, from 1991 to 1996. Barbarella also played on Miley Cyrus’s album Breakout. In 2010, Tommy became a member of Nick Jonas & the Administration. As a frequent arranger his “Symphony of the North” collaboration with the Minnesota Orchestra and The Minnesota Vikings won BEST SHOW OPEN at the annual Golden Matrix Awards 2022. His keyboard work can be heard on recordings by artists as diverse as Demi Lovato, Switchfoot, Backstreet Boys, Ziggy Marley, Miley Cyrus, Mandy Moore and many more. Ashley Commodore – is a singer from a family of talented, accomplished musicians. Her mother (Ginger Commodore), father (Bobby Commodore), and brother (Brandon Commodore) are all Twin Cities gems performing in varied music genres. Ashley has been featured with the Grammy Award winning group the Sounds of Blackness, and currently tours with National recording artist ‘Stokley’ Williams and is the newest member of the jazz vocal ensemble, Moore By Four. Wednesday’s Crooners Classics An Evening of Classic Clapton Rock Vinnie Rose returns to his early guitar roots with “Wonderful Tonight” showcasing both major hits and deep cuts of the indelible blues music of Eric Clapton. “Wonderful Tonight” will feature many songs from the 1992 Unplugged album as well as songs from Eric Clapton’s earlier stints with Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos and songs from his subsequent solo albums. Vinnie, Graydon, and Adrian have joyfully created music together for over 20 years. Their focused, whimsical style makes for both a captivating, yet relaxed performance atmosphere.
