SUMMARY:Braxton Cook
DESCRIPTION:“Cook’s newest record… is another kaleidoscopic vignette” – Downbeat\n  \nWhen the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Braxton Cook first started working on the album that would become 2025’s Not Everyone Can Go\, he was going through several transitions that he just couldn’t ignore. Last year\, Cook spent lots of time on the road — in Europe and Asia\, along with two United States tours. “I was just very busy\, and trying to juggle that with family\, it was a lot to manage\,” Cook said. Then\, in a moment of self-reflection\, he looked back on the past year\, noticed a theme emerging. Thus\, he came to this conclusion: It was OK to let go of things that weren’t serving him any longer. Transitions were natural as he stepped into fatherhood. “It was only pushing me more in that direction of understanding\,” he continued. “There’s grief that comes along with having to let certain things go to make time for the things I truly value.”  \nOne can hear Cook breaking through on Not Everyone Can Go. Here\, his signature mix of jazz and R&B feels indebted to similar hybrids of yesteryear. Musically\, the album conjures images of bright evening sunshine\, when the temperature begins to cool. Not quite Quiet Storm\, instead\, the album dabbles between the margins\, which won’t surprise Cook’s fans. He’s released acclaimed albums like Somewhere In Between\, No Doubt and Who Are You When No One Is Watching?. There\, he’s made a career of blurring the lines between genres\, landing on a sound that isn’t just one thing. Moreover\, while that’s made his music tough to pin down\, that also makes it all the more intriguing. Additionally\, the fact that you can’t label it just R&B or just jazz lends to the music’s attraction. \nRecommended for fans of Robert Glasper\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Kamasi Washington and Thundercat. \n📸: Ricardo Nagaoka

These red-blooded ramblers aren’t just a cover band: they’re a full-blown rock ‘n’ roll experience. SUMMARY:Pelicant w. Ditch Pigeon & Fairooz Nazifa
DESCRIPTION:Fairooz Nazifa is a Bangladeshi-born\, Minneapolis-based singer and multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting\, sculpture\, installation\, mixed-media animation\, and puppet-making. \n  \nPelicant is an electrifying Minneapolis-based indie rock band that soars on stage with high energy\, emotional intensity\, and an undeniable dancefloor allure. Their music is packed with punchy\, guitar-driven melodies\, infectious hooks\, and heartfelt lyrics. With influences like Franz Ferdinand\, The Strokes\, and Daft Punk\, you will be dancing along in no time! \n  \nDitch Pigeon blends shoegaze haze\, indie melancholy\, and post-metal weight into a sound that feels both dreamy and cathartic. Known for sentimental lyrics\, melodic guitar work\, and spellbinding vocals\, the band moves effortlessly between intimate slow burns and walls of fuzz-drenched noise. Their live shows balance humor\, vulnerability\, and raw intensity\, earning them a growing following across the Twin Cities DIY scene while carving out a style they proudly call “cute-gaze” today\, for themselves.

SUMMARY:The Thirsty River
DESCRIPTION:The Thirsty River is a folk | bluegrass | Americana band from the Twin Cities who have been quietly gaining a following playing bars\, breweries\, events and festivals all around the upper midwest over the past 10+ years (but who’s counting). Their third studio album\, Junk Drawer\, was released this year and has been featured on curated playlists such as GemsOnVHS monthly playlist and Spotify’s editorial “New Grass” playlist. Junk Drawer is a collection of songs\, much like the items in our very own junk drawers\, that haven’t fit into any other projects but still serve a greater purpose.\n\nThis 5-piece encompasses intimate yet energetic performances with dynamic harmonies and inevitable onstage banter. Brothers Jake (Guitar) & Evan (Banjo) lead in vocals\, with third brother Ben (mandolin & fiddle)\, Dave (keys & washboard)\, and Mike (bass) filling in those harmonies that people apparently enjoy. The Thirsty River has an undeniable passion that is constantly pushing the limits of Americana music both you and your grandpa will enjoy.

SUMMARY:Davina and The Vagabonds
DESCRIPTION:“This music\, as retro as it may be at times\, feels fun\, frisky and alive.” – American Songwriter\nDavina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene. Their high-energy live shows feature level-A musicianship\, sharp-dressed professionalism and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. Also\, their influences range from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. Moreover\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA. She now describes the town as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” Then\, she was adopted by her stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard the music that would start her journey. For example\, The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong\, Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says. \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player at home. There\, she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom. \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school. Further\, this morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band and worked [her] ass off every day since.” \nRecommended for fans of Pokey LaFarge\, Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, The Hot Sardines and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

All proceeds go to CES. Click Here to order your shirt online! (We won’t have any in person).\nJoin The OK Factor’s newsletter for info on upcoming Backyard Sessions!\n\n \nWe can’t wait to welcome you to another season of Backyard Sessions!\n \nMore about The High 48s: \nSince forming in northeast Minneapolis in 2006\, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude. \nThey’re a band with one foot in tradition and the other in the world of music today\, and one of the very few who can find an overlooked bluegrass classic in a song by M. Ward or the Clash then throw down hard on a standard by Bill Monroe. \nThe High 48s are also a band of songwriters. Here\, too\, they take a modern approach\, heeding the well-worn advice to writers: write what you know. Their songs ring true to their lives as northern city-folk rather than an imagined “sweet\, sunny south” of coal mines and dark hollers. \n \nMore about The OK Factor: \nPlayful and unexpected\, new-classical crossover duo The OK Factor writes and performs folk-inspired music influenced by multiple genres\, with an artistry that reveals their classical training. Cellist Olivia Diercks and violinist Karla Peters find great joy in defying expectations and delivering an experience outside of what audiences anticipate from a cello and violin combo. Organic and genuine\, their original compositions feel both comfortingly familiar and uniquely fresh\, and have been described as “genre-bending” (Julie Amacher\, MPR) and “pure magic” (Wausau Pilot & Review). \nThe ease with which they write and perform and their passion for educational outreach has caught the attention of the Minnesota music community in which they live and work\, as McKnight Fellowship finalists in 2026 and 2025\, recipients of a 2024 Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Education Grant\, and a 2020 Scandinavian Folk Arts and Cultural Traditions Fellowship through the American Scandinavian Foundation. Olivia and Karla invite audiences to explore music and cultivate a curiosity about its role in their lives.

He channels today’s complexities through his “hipster” filter and demonstrates why he is indeed the “first ever existential jazz rapper”.  \nIt’s been a long and varied journey for Sidran. As a six-year-old in Racine\, Wisconsin\, he played boogie-woogie piano\, leaning into his jazz records\, “literally like an Eskimo huddled around a fire”. Then\, he would grow up to play boogie-woogie piano around the world. He may be better known in Europe and Japan than in America. Also\, this is a fact of life for most jazz musicians. Despite that\, Ben Sidran is an American success story. \nHe’s a jazz pianist of international renown\, lyricist of a rock classic\, award-winning national broadcaster\, record and video producer. Also\, he’s a scholar\, author\, journalist\, and father to a second-generation musical prodigy. Sidran makes your average Renaissance man look like a slacker. \nHe is joined by his longtime bandmates and collaborators\, Billy Peterson on bass and Leo Sidran (his son) on drums. Also\, featuring special guest Ricky Peterson on organ. \nRecommended for fans of Mose Allison\, Marcia Ball\, Dan Hicks and Joey DeFrancesco. \n📸: Jean-Baptiste Millot

SUMMARY:Grace Kelly
DESCRIPTION:“tenacious… clearly in possession of virtuoso talents” – New York Times\n  \nGrace Kelly is an unequivocal musical prodigy: a singer-saxophonist-songwriter-composer and bandleader. Also\, she has rocked the jazz world through sold-out concerts and fifteen acclaimed albums. Further\, her resume includes performing at the Hollywood Bowl and joining the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert – all before reaching her mid-twenties. In 2022\, Berklee College of Music’s Board of Trustees named her its youngest member.  \nGrace’s early career highlights include performing at Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration at age sixteen. Additionally\, at fourteen she performed as a soloist with the Boston Pops\, playing an original composition with the legendary orchestra. Since then\, she has led her band in over 1\,000 shows across thirty-five countries. Moreover\, she’s performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center\, Moscow Symphony Hall\, and international jazz festivals. Critics tout her scorching saxophone stylings and purring vocals\, and she has performed and recorded with renowned artists. Here\, these include Lin Manuel-Miranda\, Dave Brubeck\, Lee Konitz\, Phil Woods\, Huey Lewis\, Harry Connick Jr.\, and Jon Batiste. Also\, Gloria Estefan\, Questlove\, and Wynton Marsalis. \nGrace’s latest release\, 2024’s At The Movies: Grace Kelly with Strings\, was inspired by Charlie Parker with Strings. This remains one of Grace’s all-time favorite albums. Additionally\, the album reflects her love of classic and contemporary movies. Here\, she reimagines some of her favorite movie music as well as songs by legendary film composers. Furthermore\, fresh arrangements showcase her signature sound.  \n“Grace Kelly plays with intelligence\, wit and feeling. She has a great amount of natural ability and the ability to adapt. That is the hallmark of a first-class jazz musician.” – Wynton Marsalis  \n“A highly accomplished musician with a charismatic and contagiously uplifting stage presence.” – Jon Batiste \nRecommended for fans of Joshua Redman\, Emmet Cohen\, Christian McBride and Branford Marsalis.

SUMMARY:Spyro Gyra
DESCRIPTION:“these… grooves are state-of-the-art” – All About Jazz\n  \nIn 2024\, Jay Beckenstein and band started its observation of the fiftieth anniversary of the band. What started as a diversion\, something that was just for fun (and twenty-five cents at the door) continues its evolution into 2025. It began inauspiciously when Beckenstein and a few musician friends in Buffalo\, NY organized a get together on their shared night off from working in bands that actually made money. It was a simple\, humble idea with a name that was likewise simple and humble\, “Tuesday Night Jazz Jam”.  \nFast forward fifty years and this jazz super-group has released over thirty albums\, garnering gold and platinum along the way. They’ve played over 10\,000 concerts on six continents. Further\, Spyro Gyra has maintained its standards of excellence. Thus\, these standards have sustained them on the “A list” of live attractions in jazz for fifty years. Renowned bass player Will Lee once referred to the ensemble as a “well-oiled road machine” as a tribute to their daunting schedule\, bringing their music to fans around the globe. \nFans of the band are familiar with the group’s rise to international prominence from humble beginnings in Buffalo\, New York. That’s when a few area musicians arranged for a weekly gig of playing less commercial music on everyone’s night off. Soon the word got around; the core group was joined by many musicians to come and have fun. And customers started showing up\, too\, prompting the club owner to press Beckenstein for a band name. Beckenstein offered up this late night\, tipsy answer\, “You can call it ‘spirogyra’”\, algae he had studied once. The next week\, he came back and there it was\, misspelling and all\, and so it began in 1974. \nRecommended for fans of Return to Forever\, Yellowjackets\, David Sanborn and Brecker Brothers. \n📸: David White

SUMMARY:Peter Himmelman
DESCRIPTION:“One of rock’s most wildly imaginative performers.” – USA Today\n  \nTo a standard-bearer like Peter Himmelman\, writing\, recording\, and releasing new music is an essential part of living. For example\, former Rolling Stone senior editor Parke Puterburgh recently referenced his consistent output in Stereo Review. Himmelman “is on the same plane as Elvis Costello\, Graham Parker\, and Bruce Springsteen and nudging his way to ‘Dylanhood’”. \nHimmelman’s latest\, 2020’s Press On\, captures the immediacy of Himmelman’s new songs. Further\, it leaves his fervent vocals and guitar front and center. There\, the recording process for Press On took just under four days. However\, writing the songs\, refining them\, and deciding which of his more than forty new songs would make the final cut\, began over three years prior.  \nFor Himmelman\, songwriting has long been a process of self-discovery. “There are technical tricks one needs to master. But for me the real work lies in transcending the mechanics of songwriting\, and inhabiting that space beyond the rational mind\,” he says.  \nThe music on Press On is both emotionally and musically varied\, from R&B-flavored piano ballads to incessant New Orleans funk. At times\, Himmelman’s steely Telecaster is reminiscent of two of his principal influences — Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker. There\, it threads itself through lyrics that seem culled from our current moment. \n“Press On is tellingly titled and deeply considered\, a further example of Himmelman’s ability to go below the surface of any circumstance and find wisdom\, revelation\, and empowerment in the process.” — American Songwriter \nRecommended for fans of Martin Zellar\, Glen Phillips\, Tina Schlieske and John Wesley Harding.

SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys
DESCRIPTION:“conjures up the spirit and the songs of Ireland’s greatest export” – Chicago Tribune\n  \nThe Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. It includes Dan Kowalke (guitar\, vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals). The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Bandleader Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers. Terry’s own originals have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people. \nRecommended for fans of Bruce Springsteen\, G.B. Leighton\, Tina and the B-Sides and Van Morrison.

SUMMARY:The Devon Allman Project:
DESCRIPTION:“Allman has found a way to extend his family’s amazing musical lineage on his own terms.” – Premier Guitar\n  \nDevon Allman’s sound lands right in the middle of some of the most soulful rock. Here\, Allman celebrates twenty years since the release of his first album and national tour. Additionally\, this special show will include material from each of Devon’s projects. These include The Allman Betts Band\, Devon Allman’s Blues Summit\, Royal Southern Brotherhood\, Honey Tribe\, and Devon Allman & Donavon Frankenreiter’s Rollers. Also\, they will play select Allman Brothers songs. \nDevon Allman gained wide recognition through projects such as Honey Tribe and later as co-founder of Royal Southern Brotherhood. There\, this supergroup-style ensemble showcased his soulful vocals and guitar work alongside other acclaimed musicians. Devon has built an independent career that honors the jam band and blues traditions. Meanwhile\, he maintains a modern\, polished tone and original songwriting voice. \nHere\, he has released multiple albums and toured extensively. Thus\, he earned a reputation for dynamic live shows\, strong musicianship\, and a style that blends blues\, rock\, soul\, and improvisational “jam” elements into a distinctive contemporary Southern sound. \n  \n \nSince 2018\, GA-20 has been at the forefront of a traditional Blues revival. The dynamic throwback trio have long been disciples of the place where traditional Blues\, Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll intersect. “We make records that we would want to listen to\,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric Blues we love.” Stubbs\, along with guitarist & vocalist Cody Nilsen and drummer Josh Kiggans\, strive to bring traditional Blues to the front lines of the modern roots music scene. “The focus for us has always been on the story\, the melody\, and on creating a mood\,” Stubbs continues. “Traditional Country and Soul have all had these massive recent revivals. We want to be part of doing that for traditional Blues music.”  \nGA-20 has drawn inspiration for their old-school sounds from the music they love by artists such as Otis Rush\, J.B. Lenoir\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Junior Wells\, Hound Dog Taylor\, Earl Hooker\, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson and so many others. Performing with what feels like reckless abandon\, GA-20 brings a timeless immediacy to every song they play with a sound that continues to grow and evolve. The band uses vintage instruments and amps to produce their authentic sound\, and favours traditional recording techniques\, like recording live off the floor together in one room\, to help recreate that energy and sonic connection.  \nIn their short history\, GA-20 have been 3x #1 Billboard Blues chart toppers\, 4x Boston Music Award winners for Best Blues Act\, and have received multiple wins and nominations at the Blues Music Awards\, Blues Blast Awards\, New England Blues Awards\, and have ascended streaming and radio charts at home and internationally. Medium.com has appropriately declared\, “This is the kind of music that travels through time while taking from the era where it was born and turning it into something fresh. Dirty and raw…timeless and modern.” \nRecommended for fans of The Allman Brothers\, Tab Benoit\, Tedeschi Trucks Band and The Black Crowes. \n📸: Venla Shalin
