SUMMARY:MC Lyte at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:“hip-hop’s original female emcee.” – Grammy.com\n  \nLegendary lyricist\, DJ\, voice-over talent\, actress\, entertainer and icon\, MC Lyte is still making crowds move across the globe. MC Lyte first appeared on the scene in 1988 with her debut album Lyte As A Rock. At the tender age of 17 she began schooling other MCs in the art of rhyme. Since then\, she has proven that greatness always prevails with a total of ten albums to her credit. \nLyte is the first rap artist ever to perform at New York’s historic Carnegie Hall. Further\, she is the first female rapper to ever receive a gold single. Additionally\, she was the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy! There\, her inspiring 1993 classic anthem\, “Ruffneck\,” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Single. Then\, her 2003 album Undaground Heat Vol.1\, hosted by Jamie Foxx\, garnered this rap legend her second Grammy nomination. Moreover\, the single “Ride Wit Me” also received a BET Award nomination for Best Female Rap Performance. In 2006\, MC Lyte became the first solo female rapper to be honored/inducted on VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors. \nLyte serves as a beautiful example that females can rock the mic just as well and oftentimes better than men. Also\, Lyte’s lyrical skills have also been tapped into by Hollywood. There\, she co-wrote and performed the television theme songs for Fox’s “Dark Angel” and BET’s “Holla.” \nRecommended for fans of Heavy D\, Big Daddy Kane\, Arrested Development and EPMD.

SUMMARY:Songs and Stories of Immigration with the Cafe Accordion Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 5:30 PM for Dinner and Drink Service.\n\n\nJoin Cafe Accordion as we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary through stories of musical migration. From the dance halls of Paris through the Mediterranean\, from Finland to Cape Verde\, through Brazil and Colombia and Portugal\, from Quebec to Louisiana\, and finally arriving in America. \nDan Newton: Accordion \nEric Mohring: Fiddle and Mandolin \nMike Cramer: Guitar \nErik Lillestol: Bass \nJoe Steinger: Percussion \nDiane Jarvi: Vocals \nElizabeth Rowan: Percussion \nDan Newton’s Cafe Accordion Orchestra (CAO) performs an eclectic mix full of French flare\, Latin heat and Bohemian attitude. The heart of the CAO repertoire is the passionate sound of the French valse-musette. The group complements the musettes with swing\, ballads\, tangos\, cha chas\, rumbas\, and cumbias to create a wonderfully varied show. They inject their music with good humor and expressive abandon. Their high level of musicianship and passion for performance makes them an entertaining concert act as well as a great dance band. \n“Excellent musicianship and an undeniable emphasis on fun. Which\, oddly enough\, is all too rare in a lot of music that comes across my desk. Love it!” — Kevin T. O’Connor\, Music Director-KBEM FM\nwww.cafeaccordion.com

SUMMARY:Ethan Iverson plays James P. Johnson and John Coltrane at Crooners
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6:30 PM for Dinner and Drink Service.\n\n\nJames P. Johnson and John Coltrane are from different eras\, so it is comparatively rare for compositions from each to be placed next to each other. It’s possible they could have met\, for many of the circa-1950 NYC jazz musicians knew James P. personally\, and Coltrane’s first records with Miles Davis were made in 1955\, the year of Johnson’s death. This unique program is essentially two sets of etudes. Posterity remembers James P. Johnson for composing the anthem of the Jazz Age\, “The Charleston\,” although the jazz pianists still work on his serious stride piano classics like “Carolina Shout” for they are both very beautiful and very nutritious. It is uncommon for a modern jazz pianist to play James P. In concert; is also uncommon for a solo pianist to tackle themes from John Coltrane\, for part of the Coltrane style is a fierce and interactive rhythm section. Iverson treats iconic Coltrane themes as etudes for expanding the possibilities of solo jazz piano\, an approach that naturally aligns with the restless exploration of the saxophonist. \nEthan Iverson: Piano \nIverson is best known for being a founding member of hometown heroes The Bad Plus. \niverson.substack.com

DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6:00 PM for Dinner and Drink Service.\n\n\nThe Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society invites you to celebrate the Halloween season with two uniquely American vampire stories\, performed in the style of vintage radio broadcasts\, complete with period commercials and live sound effects. \nIt’s an “entertaining and creepy homage to an era gone by” (Cherry and Spoon)\, brought to life by veteran Twin Cities performers Shanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, and Eric Webster\, who “use their voices to paint a picture so vivid that if you close your eyes\, you can see the action in your mind’s eye.” (Stages of Minnesota) “The Horror from the Mound” from Escape: Desperate to save his failing Texas farm\, Steve Brill stakes everything on a local legend of buried gold. What he finds beneath the earth will change his life forever. Adapted from the 1932 short story by Robert E. Howard. “Moonlight of Madness” from Inner Sanctum: Struggling author Edgar Allan Poe investigates the strange case of a woman who survived being buried alive\, only to discover that she may have returned from the grave as something else. Adapted from the 1940 short story by Manly Wade Wellman. \nShanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, and Eric Webster \nThe Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society performed its first staged old-time radio recreation in 2016 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis. Since then\, the Society has appeared at the Minnesota Fringe Festival\, Daleko Arts in New Prague\, the Wabasha Street Caves in Saint Paul\, and The Phipps Center in Hudson. Their recreations were also featured monthly from 2017 to 2019 at the James J. Hill Center and from 2020 to 2022 at Park Square Theatre in Saint Paul. Currently\, MORLS can be seen every other month at Crooners Supper Club in Minneapolis. \n “This show is an entertaining and creepy homage to an era gone by\, that of the radio drama. The creators of this show have a podcast of the same name… and their love for and knowledge of the genre is evident… There’s a reason these radio horror shows were so popular\, and happily they continue to exist in some form today thanks to Ghoulish Delights.” -Cherry and Spoon\nmysteriousoldradiolisteningsociety.com

SUMMARY:Afro-Cuban All Stars
DESCRIPTION:“hard to beat this kind of music – soulful\, technically brilliant\, sexy and uplifting.” – The ArtsDesk\n  \nAfro-Cuban All Stars is a unique orchestra that has always promoted the full range of Cuban music. This ensemble embraces several generations and all musical styles. Additionally\, over the years many of the band’s musicians have become international stars. Brilliant performers like Ruben Gonzalez\, Ibrahim Ferrer\, Guillermo Rubalcaba\, Amadito Valdes and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal have been All Stars. \nThe genesis of the Afro-Cuban All Stars dates to the early 1990s. At this time the son ensemble Sierra Maestra\, headed by Juan de Marcos\, received a lot of international exposure. Consequently\, de Marcos led a couple of very successful tours in Europe. \nAfter several years of success\, the All Stars are certainly one of the best-known and successful Cuban orchestras. Moreover\, they have earned four Grammy nominations\, starred in several documentaries and films\, and received many other distinctions. \nFurther\, Afro-Cuban All Stars has also opened the doors to a new generation by incorporating young musicians into the band. With his project\, de Marcos has developed a concept: to stand up on the roots for creating the future. More so than simply creating a band\, his approach has allowed him to expand its creative range by incorporating contemporary styles of Cuban music. To that end\, he adopts a fluid approach to adjusting the orchestra’s line-up by changing or adding musicians. He tailors the ensemble to best reflect the different styles of music from the various periods that the band features. \nThe Afro-Cubans are the same orchestra that can be seen in those distinct performances captured in now-famous film. They are in the Oscar-nominated Buena Vista Social Club documentary by Wim Wenders and the Tony Knox documentary Salon of Dreams. They also shine on DVDs Live in Japan and Live in The Hague. \nRecommended for fans of Buena Vista Social Club\, Nachito Herrera\, Tito Puente and Pedrito Martinez.
