SUMMARY:Taj Mahal & The Phantom Blues Band
DESCRIPTION:“a living link to the old blues tradition.” – Mick Jagger\n  \nIf anyone knows where to find the blues\, it’s Taj Mahal\, a brilliant artist with a musicologist’s mind. Here\, he has pursued and elevated the roots of beloved sounds with boundless devotion and skill. Then\, as he traced origins to the American South\, the Caribbean\, Africa\, and elsewhere\, he created entirely new sounds. As a result\, rock-and-roll icons such as Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones revere him. Also\, ambitious artists toiling in obscurity who are determined to combine sounds in new ways view him as a hero. No one combines tradition and avant-garde approaches as seamlessly. Come hear hits such as “Lovin’ in My Baby’s Eyes”\, Queen Bee”\, & “Everybody is Somebody”.  \nMahal remains an active force in roots music across a career spanning more than six decades. In 2025\, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Also\, he won Best Traditional Blues Album for his collaboration with Keb’ Mo’ on Get On Board. \nTaj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band form a collaboration between the blues legend and a top-tier backing band. The Phantom Blues Band formed in the 1990s to back Taj Mahal on his album Dancing the Blues. Then\, they embarked on a successful career in their own right while continuing to tour and record with Mahal. Moreover\, they blend various genres like blues\, jazz\, R&B\, and rock. Additionally\, the band members themselves are accomplished studio musicians who have worked with many famous artists. \nRecommended for fans of Keb’ Mo’\, Muddy Waters\, Dr. John and Champion Jack Dupree.

To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music\, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s\, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward.  \nMembers Adam Levy (guitar\, vocals)\, Savannah Smith (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. \nEven though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop  – quickly stole the spotlight. \n Turn Turn Turn’s Laurel Canyon meets 70s-Nashville-cosmic soul vibe is layered with three-part harmonies that stitch the band’s musical tapestry together. Brynstad\, Smith\, and Levy have distinct voices\, and the combination—a “fourth voice”—is greater than the sum of its parts. \nTo learn more about Turn Turn Turn: \n\nVisit their website here\n\n\n\n\nTriple Fiddle\nThree powerhouse local fiddle players — Rachel Calvert (Barbaro)\, Maura Dunst (The Foxgloves)\, and Tessa Nichols-Meade (Ryan Piccone Quartet)— join forces with guitarist Hannah Hendrickson to create Triple Fiddle: a collaboration of sensational triple fiddle harmonies and lusciously layered vocals. This fiddle-forward trio presents soaring arrangements of originals and covers from honky tonk\, swing\, folk\, and roots music traditions. \nTo learn more about Triple Fiddle: \n\nVisit their website here

SUMMARY:Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society: Agatha Christie in America
DESCRIPTION:Doors open for Dinner and Cocktail Service at 6:00 PM.\n\n\nLive Mystery Radio Play\nJoin The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society for an Agatha Christie double feature! The Society presents two audio plays by the grand dame of mystery\, performed in the style of an old-time radio broadcast\, complete with vintage commercials and live sound effects. It’s an “entertaining and creepy homage to an era gone by” (Cherry and Spoon)\, brought to life by veteran Twin Cities performers Shanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, and Eric Webster\, “using their voices to paint a picture so vivid that if you close your eyes\, you can see the action in your mind’s eye” (Stages of Minnesota). “The Careless Victim” from Hercule Poirot (1945): Poirot arrives in New York in search of an apartment and finds a corpse instead! The debut episode of American radio’s first and only attempt to turn Christie’s beloved Belgian sleuth into the hero of his own weekly series. “The Shadow on the Glass” from The Mysterious Mr. Quin (premiere): A dinner party\, a haunted window\, and a double murder? All in a day’s work for Mr. Satterthwaite and his curiously-named friend\, Harley Quin. The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society imagines an alternate 1945 in which the success of the Hercule Poirot radio series led to another American Agatha Christie adaptation: The Mysterious Mr. Quin. \nFeaturing Shanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, and Eric Webster \nThe Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society performed their first staged old-time radio recreation in 2016 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis. Since then\, they have appeared at the Minnesota Fringe Festival\, Daleko Arts in New Prague\, the Wabasha Street Caves in Saint Paul\, and The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson\, Wisconsin. Their recreations were also featured monthly from 2017 to 2019 at the James J. Hill Center and from 2020 to 2022 at Park Square Theater in Saint Paul. Currently\, the MORLS can be seen regularly at Crooners Supper Club in Minneapolis. \n“Shanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, and Eric Webster have this down cold — not just the technical aspect\, but the tone… Chilling as it might be to experience these tales (complete with old-school ads) alone in the dark\, it’s much more fun to experience them with a crowd.” -City Pages\nghoulishdelights.com

With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.\n \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation\, and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band Davina and The Vagabonds in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA\, which she now describes as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” She was adopted by her much older stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed away when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says.\n \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player where she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath\, and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom.\n \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school\, which morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail\, and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band\, and worked [her] ass off every day since.”\n \nDavina and the Vagabonds shine every time they play. To date\, they’ve performed in forty-five states\, twelve European countries\, and two Canadian provinces. Not to mention\, they’ve earned feverish acclaim from the Chicago Tribune\, NPR\, and more in addition to performing on BBC’s international favorite late-night program Later… With Jools Holland and appearing on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground.\n \n“Davina and the Vagabonds combat heartache with sugar and sass.”  DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE \n\n\n \n\nThank you to our sponsors\, partners\, & neighbors: \n\n\nSummit Brewing • RKR Ganja Beverages  • Tito’s Handmade Vodka • Jameson Irish Whiskey  • High Noon • Lucky One Lemonade • Nobool Presents • The Zen Arcade  • Longfellow Rising • Lake Street Council • KFAI 90.3FM • Firehouse Perfroming Arts Center • Moon Palace Books • Arbeiter Brewing   \n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2025.\n \nThe Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2026 season for our guests.
