SUMMARY:Kevin Kling & Larry Long
DESCRIPTION:“The interplay of song and story between these two longtime friends is magical. They build off of each other to share personal history that powerfully evokes time\, place\, and community.” –John Crippen\, Hennepin History Museum\n  \nGiven the number of “World’s Greatest Dad” coffee mugs\, there seems to be a fair bit of elasticity in the voting process. Larry Long and Kevin Kling are two of Minnesota’s prodigal sons. Here\, they celebrate in story and song some of the fathers and father figures that helped sculpt their lives. Larry also brings the perspective of a father and grandfather. An evening to share a laugh\, maybe shed a tear\, as they remember the men who gave it their all. If you are a dad\, a future dad\, have a dad\, know a dad… Or none of the above and just want to have a great time\, this is the show for you. \nKling and Long have been friends since they traveled the Mississippi River together in 1983. Then\, Kevin worked with Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater’s Circle of Water Circus. Also\, Larry was with the Misissippi River Revival. Moreover\, both share a deep connection to community\, family and this incredible region. \n  \n“they were both at their best – their wisdom\, their performance\, their humanity.” – Marge Ostroushko\n  \nLarry is a force in the folk music world. There\, he works with First Nations\, farmers\, Labor\, the environment\, elders and kids\, royalty and paupers. Furthermore\, his voice and guitar are at times a beacon\, a eulogy\, battle cry\, a comfort\, a prayer\, a celebration. \nKevin is a storyteller\, performing in libraries\, gymnasiums\, hospitals\, and VFWs. Additionally\, off-Broadway\, The Guthrie\, PBS\, the National Storytelling Festival. He is known for stories with humor and heart. \n  \n \nWill Kjeer\, pianist for Judy Collins\, will be accompanying Kevin & Larry on this evening of storytelling and song in celebration of fathers and father figures. With a Master’s degree from Juilliard under his belt—and as a current member of their Artist Diploma ambassador ensemble—Will Kjeer is among the vanguard of his generation bringing the continuum of jazz to new audiences and stages across the globe. \nRecommended for fans of Mark Twain\, Pete Seeger\, Garrison Keillor\, Arlo Guthrie\, Bill Evans\, and John Prine.

SUMMARY:TCJazzFest: Ronny Loew Band
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 4:45 PM for Dinner and Drink service.\n\n\nTCJazzFest – June 19-20\, 2026.\nFree Admission. Reservations are recommended.\nWhen Ronny Loew returned to the Twin Cities in 1997\, he set out to recreate the energetic spontaneity he’d lived for during Funk Nights at Boston’s Wally’s Jazz Club—where familiar tunes dissolved into fearless\, unrehearsed explorations and the audience rode every twist of the groove. That spirit became the foundation of the Ronny Loew Band\, quickly earning a devoted following at clubs\, festivals\, and events across the region. In 1999\, the band helped launch the inaugural Twin Cities Jazz Festival\, opening the event and backing guitarist Eric Essix\, a Berklee-era friend of Ronny’s. When rain washed out the main stage\, an impromptu after-hours jam at The Red Sea was captured live and released as a hit CD. \nAfter a hiatus beginning in 2002 as Ronny focused on family\, the band has returned nearly three decades later with renewed fire. Blending original members with fresh talent\, the Ronny Loew Band delivers high-energy funk jazz that fuses jazz\, funk\, soul\, R&B\, and rock\, mixing originals with bold takes on timeless classics. With nods to saxophone legends like David Sanborn\, Maceo Parker\, Kirk Whalum\, Grover Washington Jr.\, Toto\, The Gap Band\, and Tower of Power no two shows are ever the same—and that fearless\, in-the-moment approach is exactly what keeps audiences coming back. \nThe Twin Cities Jazz Fest is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission of bringing communities together to enjoy and appreciate the art form of jazz and inspire new generations of youth. What started as a small one-day event in downtown Minneapolis 27 years ago has grown into one of the largest free civic jazz festivals in the upper Midwest. \nwww.twincitiesjazzfestival.com

SUMMARY:Kronos Quartet: Live Album Recording at Dakota
DESCRIPTION:David Harrington\, violin\nGabriela Díaz\, violin\nAyane Kozasa\, viola\nPaul Wiancko\, cello \nThe Kronos Quartet comes to the Dakota with a thought-provoking program built for the current moment in Minneapolis. Here\, they play works from innovative composers including John Coltrane\, Michael Gordon\, Aleksandra Vrebalov\, Abel Meeropol\, JLIN\, and more. Furthermore\, Kronos examines the existential human rights of joy\, grief\, and healing. The quartet also welcomes the hometown duo of Pow Wow singer Joe Rainey and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Broder to finish out the set. Thus\, this amplifies the strong musical voices of Minneapolis. Kronos Quartet Live Album Recording will be a concert to remember\, featuring resonant music that reflects on the here and now in the world. \nFor over fifty years\, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet has reimagined what the string quartet experience can be. One of the most celebrated and influential groups of our era\, Kronos has given thousands of concerts worldwide. Additionally\, they have released more than seventy recordings and collaborated with many of the world’s most accomplished composers and performers across many genres. Kronos has received over forty awards\, including three Grammys and the Polar Music\, Avery Fisher\, and Edison Klassiek Oeuvre Prizes. In 2024\, Kronos’ Pieces of Africa album was inducted into the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress. Most recently\, Kronos Quartet has been selected as the Doomsday Clock Artists in Residence for The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. \nThrough its nonprofit organization\, Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA)\, Kronos has commissioned more than 1\,100 works and arrangements for quartet. KPAA also manages Kronos’ concert tours\, local performances\, recordings\, and education programs. There\, in its most ambitious commissioning effort to date\, KPAA has recently completed Kronos Fifty for the Future. Through this initiative\, Kronos has commissioned—and distributed online for free—fifty new works for string quartet. Here\, these are designed for students and emerging professionals\, written by composers from around the world. \nPROGRAM TO BE SELECTED FROM THE FOLLOWING\nJlin (arr. The Cedar is proud to welcome this award-winning New Orleans-based band to The Cedar for a special Juneteenth celebration. \n\n\n\nHOT 8 BRASS BAND\nThe New Orleans-based Hot 8 Brass Band draw on the traditional jazz heritage of their hometown\, alongside more modern styles\, including elements of funk\, hip hop\, rap\, and its local variation\, “bounce.” The collective earned a win in the 64th Annual Grammy Awards 2022 for their feature on John Batiste’s ‘Album of The Year’\, following the nomination of ‘The Life & Times Of…’ for ‘Best Regional Roots Album’ in 2013. \nTranscending genres and trends\, Hot 8 have performed and collaborated with the likes of Jon Batiste\, Blind Boys of Alabama\, Basement Jaxx and Alice Russell\, and provided live support for Mos Def\, Lauryn Hill and Mary J Blige. Since forming they have established a decade-long affiliation with actor/BBC 6Music DJ Craig Charles\, among other tastemakers\, DJs and journalists worldwide. After a festive appearance Live at Maida Vale for Lauren Laverne (BBC 6 Music)\, the Hot 8 Brass Band performed for Jools Holland’s annual Hootenanny on BBC Two to welcome in 2019. Later that year\, after taking to the stage at the BRIT awards in February\, Hot 8 Brass Band were invited on the European leg of George Ezra’s tour. \nWith multiple sell-out shows at London’s Roundhouse and Brighton’s Dome\, Hot 8 continues to share their acclaimed releases. Albums such as ‘Vicennial…’\, ‘On The Spot’ and ‘Take Cover’\, are brought to the stage\, honoring their city’s musical traditions\, while forging their own powerful legacy. Mixing an old-school street brass approach with funkier currents and hip hop vocals\, Hot 8’s magnificent originals are juxtaposed with fresh versions of Snoop Dogg\, Stevie Wonder\, The Specials and of course their anthemic take on Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”. \nThe recent passing of Bennie Pete\, the beloved co-founder and sousaphone player for the outfit\, was honored in true New Orleans fashion with ‘The Bossman Tour 2023’\, paying tribute to his “galvanizing force” as a “leader\, teacher\, and mentor”. Fellow bandmates added that “Bennie was an inspiration to band and to many other musicians\, and the entire musical and cultural community.” The dates celebrated the late Bennie’s “greatest wish… that New Orleans culture lives on for future generations”. This parade followed the success of the Mardi Gras 2020 and ‘Take Cover’ 2019 tours. \nIn 2024\, the band will hit the road again for the “Big Tuba Tour\,” featuring dates across the West Coast of the United States. \nLearn more about HOT 8 BRASS BAND. \n\n\n\nBrass Solidarity is a collective of musicians\, activists\, and community members using their sound as a voice for justice. We perform as a sonic occupation to heal\, spread joy\, inspire hope\, and share love while dismantling white supremacy and oppressive constructs. We were birthed from the movement for Black Liberation in George Floyd square\, meeting there weekly as a continuous offering to the community. The music is by the people and for the people as a passionate campaign to celebrate community\, educate\, and uplift marginalized groups. \nLearn more about Brass Solidarity. \n\n\n\nTarik Thornton is a New Orleans native who resides in South Minneapolis. He is known as a crate-digging connoisseur and radio host with a deep reverence for funk\, soul\, and hip-hop. He is the mind behind the beloved\, genre-defying mix show Quiet Village\, which airs on Saturdays at 5 p.m. on KRSM Radio\, where he has been a resident DJ/host for the past 9 years. \nOn stage\, he has shared bills with artists such as Durand Jones and Bun B of UGK just to name a few\, always bringing a purposeful\, feel-first approach to the decks that resonates with his listeners. \nWhether curating soundscapes live on air\, commanding the room behind the turntables\, or shaping the culture behind the scenes\, Tarik is constantly connecting the dots between rhythm and soul.
