SUMMARY:Ben Sidran
DESCRIPTION:“Inspirational\, entertaining\, life-affirming and swinging like crazy.” – London Jazz News\n  \nBen Sidran’s love of music has led to work as pianist\, singer-songwriter\, author\, record producer and music journalist. Also\, he has accomplished many other things in his sixty-year career. Further\, he acts as his own short-order cook\, juggling his own career and his projects. He has produced Steve Miller\, Mose Allison\, Diana Ross\, Boz Scaggs\, Phil Upchurch\, Tony Williams\, Jon Hendricks\, Richie Cole and Van Morrison. He recorded his most recent solo album\, 2024’s Rainmaker\, in France and features a collection of original songs. He channels today’s complexities through his “hipster” filter and demonstrates why he is indeed the “first ever existential jazz rapper”.  \nIt’s been a long and varied journey for Sidran. As a six-year-old in Racine\, Wisconsin\, he played boogie-woogie piano\, leaning into his jazz records\, “literally like an Eskimo huddled around a fire”. Then\, he would grow up to play boogie-woogie piano around the world. He may be better known in Europe and Japan than in America. Also\, this is a fact of life for most jazz musicians. Despite that\, Ben Sidran is an American success story. \nHe’s a jazz pianist of international renown\, lyricist of a rock classic\, award-winning national broadcaster\, record and video producer. Also\, he’s a scholar\, author\, journalist\, and father to a second-generation musical prodigy. Sidran makes your average Renaissance man look like a slacker. \nHe is joined by his longtime bandmates and collaborators\, Billy Peterson on bass and Leo Sidran (his son) on drums. Also\, featuring special guest Ricky Peterson on organ. \nRecommended for fans of Mose Allison\, Marcia Ball\, Dan Hicks and Joey DeFrancesco. \n📸: Jean-Baptiste Millot

SUMMARY:Toots meets Django with the Mill City Hot Club
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6:30 PM for Dinner and Drink Service.\n\n\nMill City Hot Club brings Hot Jazz and Virtuoso Harmonica together\nMill City Hot Club is a Minneapolis-based band playing American hot jazz from the 1930s and 40s with a French twist. Joyful\, upbeat and danceable\, their music will definitely make you smile. In this unique evening of music\, Mill City Hot Club welcomes harmonica virtuoso Clint Hoover\, bringing together the music of fellow Belgian jazz virtuosos Toots Thielemans (chromatic and diatonic harmonica) and Django Reinhardt (jazz Manouche guitar). You’ll hear vintage jazz\, 21st century takes on the classics\, and a few surprises. It’s a must-see event! \nClint Hoover: Chromatic and Diatonic Harmonica \nDean Harrington: Guitar \nMark Kreitzer: Guitar \nSteve Pikal: Upright Bass \nMark Kreitzer is a member of the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame\, as well as the Minnesota Rock and Country Hall of Fame\, Mark Kreitzer is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. Mark has recorded with and performs jazz with the Mill City Hot Club\, Patty and the Buttons and Clearwater Hot Club. He also has recorded two albums of original material\, one with his own band the Mark Kreitzer Band. \nSteve Pikal is a premier string bassist and a cornerstone of the Twin Cities jazz scene. Known as a “perpetual motion machine” on the upright\, Steve provides a driving rhythmic foundation for some of the finest Traditional Jazz and Swing ensembles in the country. A “first-call” musician for festivals nationwide\, he is celebrated for his technical precision\, perfect pitch\, and a performance style that radiates genuine joy \nDean Harrington has been a jazz musician performing throughout the twin cities with his own band Mill City Hot Club and other local groups for two decades. Dean holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the University of MN and was a first prize winner in the Schubert Club competition. He is proud of his work as a guitar teacher for over 30 years at K & S Conservatory of Music in Woodbury\, The Music Lab in Minneapolis\, and Mount Olivet School of Music in Edina. Fun fact: Dean grew up in Fridley and his mom worked at Crooners in the 1970s when it was the Shorewood Inn. \nClint Hoover is one of a select group of musicians to have mastered both the chromatic and diatonic harmonica\, He began playing the harp after seeing Muddy Waters perform in his hometown of Minneapolis. From pre-war blues to modern jazz\, Clint has delved deep into the musical possibilities of the harmonica. A professional for 40 years\, Clint has lent his talents to movies\, commercials\, TV\, radio\, theater\, instruction books and a host of album projects. His own recordings have received glowing reviews internationally. He recently relocated back to the Twin Cities after living Pittsburgh for the last 15 years. In the steel city\, he performed with guitarist Ernie Hawkins and luminaries of the Pittsburgh blues scene; was in the Hot Club group Sweet Atmosphere and performed with his own jazz group. \n“To the short list of great jazz harmonica players\, you can now add the name Clint Hoover. Mild mannered off stage\, he’s a monster onstage or in the studio\, a smokin’ and soulful soloist who will huff and puff and cajole your house down.” -Tom Surowicz\, Minneapolis Star and Tribune music critic and host of Monday Evening Jazz on KBEM radio\, Mpls\nwww.facebook.com/millcityhotclub

All proceeds go to CES. Click Here to order your shirt online! (We won’t have any in person).\nJoin The OK Factor’s newsletter for info on upcoming Backyard Sessions!\n\n \nWe can’t wait to welcome you to another season of Backyard Sessions!\n \nMore about The High 48s: \nSince forming in northeast Minneapolis in 2006\, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude. \nThey’re a band with one foot in tradition and the other in the world of music today\, and one of the very few who can find an overlooked bluegrass classic in a song by M. Ward or the Clash then throw down hard on a standard by Bill Monroe. \nThe High 48s are also a band of songwriters. Here\, too\, they take a modern approach\, heeding the well-worn advice to writers: write what you know. Their songs ring true to their lives as northern city-folk rather than an imagined “sweet\, sunny south” of coal mines and dark hollers. \n \nMore about The OK Factor: \nPlayful and unexpected\, new-classical crossover duo The OK Factor writes and performs folk-inspired music influenced by multiple genres\, with an artistry that reveals their classical training. Cellist Olivia Diercks and violinist Karla Peters find great joy in defying expectations and delivering an experience outside of what audiences anticipate from a cello and violin combo. Organic and genuine\, their original compositions feel both comfortingly familiar and uniquely fresh\, and have been described as “genre-bending” (Julie Amacher\, MPR) and “pure magic” (Wausau Pilot & Review). \nThe ease with which they write and perform and their passion for educational outreach has caught the attention of the Minnesota music community in which they live and work\, as McKnight Fellowship finalists in 2026 and 2025\, recipients of a 2024 Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Education Grant\, and a 2020 Scandinavian Folk Arts and Cultural Traditions Fellowship through the American Scandinavian Foundation. Olivia and Karla invite audiences to explore music and cultivate a curiosity about its role in their lives.

SUMMARY:The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society Presents: TRUE CRIME
DESCRIPTION:Doors open for Dinner and Cocktail Service at 6:00 PM.\n\n\nJoin The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society for an evening of classic crime dramas torn from the headlines of yesteryear! TRUE CRIME features two vintage radio plays inspired by real events\, recreated in the style of an old-time radio broadcast\, complete with period commercials and live sound effects. It’s an “entertaining and creepy homage to an era gone by” (Cherry and Spoon)\, brought to life by veteran Twin Cities performers Shanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, and Eric Webster\, who “use their voices to paint a picture so vivid that if you close your eyes\, you can see the action in your mind’s eye” (Stages of Minnesota). THE PLAYS “The Hangman and William Palmer\, Who Won” from Crime Classics (1953) A scheming doctor orchestrates a series of deaths to help pay for his gambling habit. “The Big Thank You” from Dragnet (1950) Detective Joe Friday investigates a paroled murderess whose paperwork raises troubling questions. The more he investigates\, the more suspicious she seems. \nShanan Custer\, Joshua English Scrimshaw\, Tim Uren\, Eric Webster \nThe Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society performed their first staged old-time radio recreation in 2016 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis. Since then\, they have appeared at the Minnesota Fringe Festival\, Daleko Arts in New Prague\, The Wabasha Street Caves in Saint Paul\, and The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson\, Wisconsin. Their recreations were also featured monthly from 2017 to 2019 at the James J. Hill Center and from 2020 to 2022 at Park Square Theater in Saint Paul. Currently\, the MORLS can be seen bi-monthly at Crooners Supper Club. \n“An artisanal\, old-school way of making entertainment… The fun is in watching these fine actors work almost exclusively with their voices … and to see them create a sepia-toned world with handmade sound effects.” – Pioneer Press \nwww.ghoulishdelights.com
