Recent albums have covered everything from domestic violence and fertility issues to the separation of families at the US border with Mexico. They also play barnstorming numbers about motorbikes and bourbon. – The Guardian\, 2022.  \n\n\n\nPhoto by Laura Schneider \n\n\nDELLA MAE\nEach generation\, perhaps once a decade\, bluegrass experiences a band or an artist that redefines and recenters the genre itself. Della Mae is one such band.  \nThe GRAMMY-nominated string band was founded in 2010 and over the next decade and a half they’ve demonstrated to the roots music world\, once and for all\, that a band of all women is not\, nor has ever been\, a mere novelty. They remain at the forefront of the explosion of women instrumentalists and all-women acts in roots music and their impact is striking and measurable – not just in North America\, but around the globe. \nNow 15 years since their origin\, Della Mae can boast their strongest lineup yet. Founders Kimber Ludiker and Celia Woodsmith are joined by guitarist and songwriter Avril Smith and vocalist and two-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year Vickie Vaughn. \nThere has never been a band like Della Mae in roots music before\, but thanks to Kimber Ludiker\, Celia Woodsmith\, Avril Smith\, Vickie Vaughn – and all of the women who have been part of this band over its long life – we know there will be many more bands\, singers\, songwriters\, and pickers just like Della Mae in the future. \nTo learn more about DELLA MAE: \n\nVisit their website here\n\n\n\n\nHalf Baked\nHalf Baked is a new-ish bluegrass project comprised of veteran Twin Cities musicians Liz Ashworth (La Plant Road)\, resident mandolin phenom\, flat picking champion Clint Birtzer (High 48s\, Sawtooth)\, Wisconsin banjo prodigy David Robinson (High 48s\, formerly Monroe Crossing)\, sweet and saucy Rina Rossi on bass (Steam Machine\, Alum Ridge Boys and Ashlee)\, and fiddle champ AJ Srubas (Steam Machine\, Alum Ridge Boys and Ashlee). \nOriginally assembled for a one-time only Kenny Baker tribute show\, they had way too much fun playing together and decided they better find some excuse to continue. The project has expanded beyond it’s Baker tune origins to explore a wide variety of traditional and contemporary bluegrass repertoire\, including vocal duets\, trios\, and quartets\, instrumentals\, and everything from trad grass to mash grass to whatever else they feel like playing. \nTo learn more about Half Baked: \n\nVisit their website here

SUMMARY:THEM COULEE BOYS with Kiernan at Cedar Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Them Coulee Boys spent the past decade-plus establishing themselves as one of the Midwest’s premier purveyors of bluegrass and Americana.\n\n\nThe Cedar Presents \nTHEM COULEE BOYS with Kiernan\nFriday\, April 17\, 2026 / Doors: 7:00 PM / Show: 8:00 PM \nAll Ages \nStanding \nThis is a standing show with an open floor. To request seating or other access accommodations\, please go to our Access Page. \nFor Cedar presented shows\, online ticket sales typically end one hour before the door time\, and then\, based on availability\, tickets will be available at the door. Tickets purchased at the door will include a $1 Eventbrite fee. \n\n\nABOUT THIS SHOW\nThem Coulee Boys spent the past decade-plus establishing themselves as one of the Midwest’s premier purveyors of bluegrass and Americana. The Cedar is thrilled to welcome the Eau Claire-based band to our stage for the first time. \n\n\n\nTHEM COULEE BOYS\n“A rollicking blend of bluegrass\, folk\, and rock and roll” – Folk Alley  \nSoren Staff and Beau Janke—co-founders of folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys—met as camp counselors in northern Wisconsin in 2011. Their weekend workshopping of Avett Brothers and classic country tunes led to original songs and adding Soren’s brother Jens on mandolin\, Neil Krause on electric bass and Stas Hable on drums.  \nThe band’s name is a nod to the glacial melt-carved river valleys they call home\, known by early French fur trappers as coulees. Known for wild swings of emotion during sets\, it is not unusual to see fans in tears and minutes later dancing with abandon. The honesty and ability to talk and sing about the feelings and emotions that shape them has endeared them to a growing group of fans and friends.  \nOver the course of five albums\, the band has garnered international attention and earned press in Americana UK\, American Songwriter\, Ditty TV\, Folk Alley\, and The Bluegrass Situation. The band has played support to Trampled by Turtles\, Los Lobos\, Old Crow Medicine Show and Band of Heathens and No Depression writes of the recent release\, “a remarkably wide-ranging\, enduringly sympathetic examination of the human condition.”  \n2025 marks the release of No Fun In The Chrysalis\, an expansive new collection that finds the band picking up where their 2021 release\, Namesake\, left off. Goldmine writes “TCB present their material with the presence of War on Drugs and Band of Horses (“Mountains”)\, but with an intimacy at times of Rick Danko’s best work with The Band (‘I Am Not Sad’).” \nThe band’s co-founder\, Soren Staff\, wrote about his ongoing struggles with self-worth and anxiety on “I Am Not Sad\,” the first single from the album – “it was a tonic\, 4 minutes of musical therapy hearing this for the first time\,” claimed Americana UK. The band worked again with Grammy-winning producer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver\, Sufjan Stevens\, Humbird)\, whose production on Namesake shepherded the band beyond their folk-grass\, Americana roots to “go electric.” No Fun In The Chrysalis was recorded at The Hive in the band’s hometown of Eau Claire. The Bluegrass Situation calls it\, “Rambunctious\, playful\, and wonderfully inspired\, the recording is submerged in the mystery of transformation; the relentless blitz of change the most dominant theme of the songs.” \nTo learn more about Them Coulee Boys: \n\nVisit their website here\n\n\n\n\nKiernan\nKiernan is the Minneapolis-based musical project of Laura Kiernan\, who is very excited to be playing with a band. Her indie folk tunes can be described as “sounds for when you’re feeding the pigeons.” In other words: soft\, silly\, spacious and best done with friends. She is joined by Nate LeBrun (Humbird\, Squinny) on drums\, Maddie Thies (anni xo\, Sister Species) on bass\, and Jared Johnson on guitar. The band released its first full length album in 2025\, after being named one of the Best New Bands by First Avenue that year. They’re excited to release more this year – they hope it nourishes your ears like a nice hunk of bread. \nTo learn more about Kiernan: \n\nVisit their Instagram page here
