He attended Milwaukee Area Technical College where he completed an Associate’s degree in Music Occupations and later won a Rita Tallent Picken scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin – Parkside. Cody has studied extensively with Steve Peplin, Russ Johnson, Solomon Parham, JD Allen, Jesse Catalino Montijo and James Crowley, DM. He has also taken lessons with Ari Honig, Johannes Weidenmueller, Scott Hesse, Pete McCann, and Aaron Gardner. An outstanding improviser, Cody has become a fixture on the Twin Cities jazz scene since settling in Minneapolis, where he has performed with Cody Steinmann Trio, Sightless Quartet, Cody Steinmann Band (a headlining act for the 2021 Twin Cities Jazz Festival), The Session (Solomon Parham), Kevin Washington, Javier Santiago, Pete Whitman, Kenne Thomas, L.A. Buckner, Chris Bates, JT Bates, Fode Bangoura, Chris Smith, Omar Abdul Karim, Pete Hennig, Graydon Peterson, Jake Baldwin, Nelson Devereaux, and Steve Kenny. In September 2019, he released his debut album 7 (C0D3 7), a musical chronicle of Cody’s youth. He then released his second album, Sightless Quartet Live, in May 2021. Sightless Quartet is the first group Cody formed upon moving to the Twin Cities, dedicated to exploring the intersections between jazz, metal, and hip hop. Cody was a featured artist alongside Grammy award winning bass player Ben Williams, known for his work with Pat Metheny Unity Band, on Solomon Parham’s 2022 release Forward. Recently, The Cody Steinmann Trio, released a series of singles including fan favorites “Not Sappy At All”, “Because I Think She’s Beautiful”, and “Another Blues Head”. Curators Note : This performance features national artist and Saxophone Legend JD Allen, who’s in town to record with Cody Steinmann’s trio and play select events. We are lucky to have an artist of this magnitude on the show and couldn’t do it without additional support and the generosity of JD Allen. There will be monsters onstage for this event. Henry Berberi is a New York City/Minnesota based saxophonist and composer, currently attending the Manhattan School of Music. This set will feature original compositions, in addition to a couple compositions from other composers. 9:30pm Will Schmid Quartet Will Schmid – Guitar Patrick Adkins – Piano Alma Engebretson – Bass Tarek Abdelqader – Drums Minneapolis and Houston-based guitarist and composer, Will Schmid, has been performing his original music for just over a decade. Before moving to Texas for PhD studies at Rice University in 2020, his duos, trios, and quartets frequently headlined popular Minnesota jazz series including Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog, Saturday Night Jazz at KJ’s Hideaway, and the illicit Jazz Workshop. He has led ensembles in multiple appearances at the Twin Cities and Iowa City Jazz Festivals, and at nationally renowned venues such as Brookyln’s ShapeShifter Lab and Cleveland’s BOP STOP at The Music Settlement. He has played with Jake Baldwin, Michelle Kinney, Dean Magraw, and Greg Lewis, and his bands have opened for Eric Kamau Grávátt and Dave King. As a member of the Twin Cities modern jazz collective SPACE, he has released two studio albums of original music: 2019’s “Non-Trivial Problem” and 2022’s “The Approaching Coast.” Debuting at Icehouse Minneapolis last summer, Schmid’s new quartet for March 9 features pianist Patrick Adkins, bassist Alma Engebretson, and drummer Tarek Abdelqader. Curators Note : This evening features two exceptional still-in-college cats who are both examples of something freakish that happens in Minnesota in the past decade or so with the continual emergence of full-fledged Jazz performing ability manifesting in individuals so very early in their careers.
