Groovy and Ethereal with the Neighborhood Quartet
Dunsmore Jazz Room 6161 Hwy 65 NE, MinneapolisDinner and drinks service starts 1 hour before showtimes. An Evening of Evocative Instrumental Music Sticky melodies layered over funky grooves, with clever arrangements, tasty solos, and plenty of vibraphone! Steve Roehm: Vibraphone Dan Schwartz: Guitar, Vocals Nick Salisbury: Bass Greg Schutte: Drums If you spend some time with the quartet’s music, you won’t be surprised to learn its members are in-demand players around and beyond the Twin Cities. Roehm’s vibes are essential to the imaginatively interpretative trio the New Standards, fronted by Chan Poling (the Suburbs) and John Munson (Semisonic). As a supporting musician, Schwartz has played with many singer-songwriters and acoustic acts, including Dan Navarro and Peter Mayer. Drummer Greg Schutte, in addition to being among the finest jazz drummers in the Twin Cities, has played and toured with Mickey Hart, Chastity Brown, and Ryan Bingham, a gig he shares with NHQT bassist Nick Salisbury. Schutte is also a sound designer and runs a recording studio, Boom Island Recording, where he ably produced the Neighborhood Quartet’s album. The big-eared and agile Salisbury, despite stiff internal competition, must be the group’s most scheduled player; in 2023, he played 353 gigs, and is a particular favorite with songwriters and Americana acts such as Brian Fallon, Sarah Morris, Jack Klatt, and the Dollys. “Add the debut LP by the band of seasoned Twin Cities jazz and rock sidemen to your list of cool instrumental to groove to while getting work done, à la Khrungbin or Hermanos Gutiérrez. Vibraphonist Steve Roehm of The New Standards leads the be-bopping alongside Dan Schwartz’s neo-twangy and sometimes surfy guitar through 10 original tracks you wish were 50 instead; not just so you could get more work done.” – Chris Riemenschneider – Minnesota Star Tribune theneighborhoodquartet.com

Steve Allen presented her at various times on his national television show, which led to an RCA recording contract, seven albums and 34 singles including her hit record of “Cabaret”. Beside the 76 appearances on Carson, she performed multiple times on The Merv Griffin Show, The Mike Douglas Show, The Hollywood Palace, The Jim Nabors Show and 3 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Maye appeared twice, 2019 and 2022 on CBS Sunday Morning with Mo Rocca. On NBC’s Harry, she sang her classic version of “Here’s To Life” and was interviewed by Harry Connick, Jr. Her RCA recording of “Too Late Now” was included by the Smithsonian Institution on an album of the 110 best American compositions of the 20th century. Last year, her concert in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall was preceded by a full-page preview in The New York Times and was sold out, with 2,800 people in attendance. She performed with the 80-piece New York Pops Orchestra conducted by Steven Reineke, receiving an unprecedented 12 standing ovations. There were seven rave reviews and she received a proclamation from NYC Mayor Eric Adams at the event declaring March 24, 2023, “Marilyn Maye Day”. Maye continues to perform throughout the United States in various clubs and concert halls. For the past 18 years, she has appeared regularly each year in New York City, in the spring and fall at 54 Below for 10 or more sold-out nights, as well as Birdland and Dizzy’s at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Each year, twice a year since 2012, her multi-night engagements are sold out at The Purple Room in Palm Springs, Crooner’s in Minneapolis, MIM Theater in Phoenix, AZ and many other venues. “Marilyn Maye has everything. She has a theatrical flair that captivates and enthralls, and jazz-spiced chops that can reach notes most singers a third her age can’t even hit in their dreams. She’s the real deal, the surviving artist of the American popular singer.”–Rex Reed, New York Observer MarilynMaye.com
