Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $6 at Aster
Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $6 at Aster
Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty, mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.
The Daily Norm w. D.C Leonhardt, The Cottonwood Shivers
The Daily Norm w. D.C Leonhardt, The Cottonwood Shivers
The Daily Norm is the solo project of Kae Layne, a guitarist from Connecticut, started in 2022. His fingerstyle technique is described as delicate, atmospheric, and thought-provoking. Inspired by the likes of Lindsay Buckingham, Paul McCartney and Bruce Cockburn, he takes what he learns and adds it to his style. His hope is that through his playing and his music, he can reach and connect with others. Instagram: https://instagram.com/thedailynorm1586?igshid=MzNlNGNkZWQ4Mg== +++++++ Though now residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, D.C. Leonhardt is originally from Wyoming: a landscape that frequently haunts his songs. Somewhat of a folk traditionalist, his shows are a blend of old tunes and originals, stories intertwined with songs. By looking more closely at the ordinary — labor, love, and religion — his songs highlight the tragedy and the humor in it all. +++++++ The Cottonwood Shivers is a music project founded in 2023 by English American songwriter Will Adlard. While backpacking across the US in 2011, Will fell in love with the girl he would one day marry. They eventually settled in Saint Paul, MN, where Will calls home. The Cottonwood Shivers combines Will’s influences of blues and folk with a healthy dose of emotional sensitivity. The project’s first single, “Ice Cream”, was released in 2023.”

A Mini Grand Finale – One Night in the Fairy Forest at 480 Arts
A sweet story set in a mythical world, a theatrical event for the whole family! This one-woman theatrical show presents a magical world of sprites, fairies, and other mythical beings as depicted in music throughout the centuries. Individual songs are repurposed into a narrative arc with sweet, playful, and mysterious characters. We meet the woodland fairies and their radiant queen, who is deeply connected to nature. She is confident, strong, and head over heels in love with her fairy king, and all is well on earth. Join our event to find out what happens to them. The music spans centuries and genres. We pay homage to Henry Purcell’s “Fairy Queen” opus from the 17th century, Beethoven’s lighthearted Irish Fairy song cycle from 1810, Britten and Humperdinck from the turn of the 20th century, and even contemporary artists such as Bjork and Florence Welch. This lighthearted little fable helps us realize that letting baseless doubts and suspicions into our hearts can cloud our abilities and the beauty of our natures.Gabrielle Doran, sopranoMobile Mini-Concerts Musicians:Marcoantonio Real-d'Arbelles, violinPhil Rukavina, luteCharles Asch, celloAsako Hirabayashi, harpsichordNewly added family event to wrap the MN Bach Festival & Mobile Mini-Concerts Series. Todd Albright at White Squirrel
Todd Albright at White Squirrel
Todd Albright is a country blues, twelve string guitar player and vocalist based in Detroit, Michigan. Grounded in the pre-war era of the blues tradition (1880-1939), Todd is a mindful purveyor of blues history. His repertoire upholds musical pillars such as Blind Willie McTell, George Carter, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly. His life’s work continues the distinguished tradition of the very roots of American music as told by the African American musicians who created it. Todd’s vigorous, gritty and soulful performances are accompanied by stories of the masters and a deep intuitive sense of respect for craft, providing audiences with a meaningful experience while creating a transcendent moment. One of the top blues guitarists in the world, Todd is the only contemporary twelve string player in his genre. Todd began playing the blues while still a teenager, some twenty-five years ago. Initially, he was drawn to the sound of the finger-picked style and has since immersed himself in the foundational music and narratives of American culture. Over the years, Todd has shared the stage with artists such as Roy Book Binder, Charlie Parr, Paul Geremia, and Dakota Dave Hull. Todd’s first full-length LP, Fourth Floor Visitor, was released by Jett Plastic Recordings out of Detroit, Michigan (2017). His latest album, Detroit Twelve String: Blues & Rags, is out now on Third Man Records (2017).

The Driftless Revelers *OUTSIDE* at White Squirrel
The Driftless Revelers *OUTSIDE* at White Squirrel
Driftless Revelers will be outside playing the Magnolia Band Shell The Driftless Revelers formed in the second spring of the first global pandemic of the 21st century, with one ear turned toward the shellac platters and Victrola virtuosos of the early to mid 20th century, and the other ear glued to the soundscapes of the 1960’s & 1970’s American freak-folk scene. Since their debut tour in 2021, the band has billed with Grammy winning bluegrass legends like Tim O’Brien, toured extensively throughout the Upper Midwest, and had breakout performances at several festivals and events (Mile of Music in Appleton, WI. featured in Rolling Stone Magazine). These Eau Claire, Wisconsin based weirdos have earned a cult following of devoted fans from Minnesota to Michigan who appreciate their irreverent, highly original, and sometimes slightly psychedelic interpretation of American roots music with a Midwest twist. Their live show banter and thoroughly entertaining sets have earned them comparisons to Ween, Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, Tenacious D, and the Holy Modal Rounders. Their debut record, American Fork Standards (2022), was well received by their family members, and a few other people who said nice things about it. Featuring the original songwriting of Ben Nelson, Matthew R. Sayles, and Jerod Kaszynski, the Driftless Revelers will pleasure a crowd with plectral wah pedal banjo tones, the mournful wailing of resophonic steel guitars, and the up-right bass bellows of an era that can’t quite be defined, but revels in the timeless ephemera of weird old-time American music. With influences as varied and eccentric as a proper musty smelling thrift store record collection, the band grooves merrily through early roots blues and jazz music, to hillbilly and string band howlers, all the way into the not-quite folk but not-quite psychedelic realms of their own creation. A Driftless Revelers show will lure you in with their joy–keep you dancing with their search for the cosmic groove in the confines of stringed instruments–and will send you on your way with flashbacks of the Driftless Revelry found only in the essence of the intangible reaches of notes once played– that then fall silent

Early Show R&R Sunday: Jeff Ray & Molly Maher
Sun June 9 Molly Maher & Jeff Ray, 1pm https://mollymaher.com/ https://jeffraymusic.com/ Molly Maher resides on the border between the lands of Americana and the Blues and moves beautifully between them, blending simmer and cool with kick-ass guitar playing. Molly has traveled the roads of the American music tradition and returned to sing about it with an authentic and sage voice. To see her perform live is an unforgettable experience. An incomparable singer and songwriter with compelling depth and soul and cutting lyrics draws from the deep roots of Americana music. Writing songs that ring true her singing is a fine balance of deep and soulful, somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Bonnie Raitt. Twangy and lament-filled spirit, guitar driven country-folk-jam with a blues swagger. Molly will be joined by Minnesota resonator slide-guitarist and songwriter Jeff Ray. Ray‘s music is rooted in the traditions of acoustic blues and American primitive fingerstyle guitar while also integrating Indian classical and world music styles under the cryptic guise of alternate guitar tunings. His music recalls early blues and rock, fingerstyle-folk, and Indian Carnatic music – sounding equal parts Ry Cooder, Grateful Dead and RL Burnside. Jeff has shared the stage with Chris Smither, Justin Townes Earl, Indigenous, Spider John Koerner, Earl Greyhound, Black Diamond Heavies, Pat Donohue, Retribution Gospel Choir, Dawes, and Charlie Parr, among others. He has earned recognition as a first-place winner of the Minnesota Blues Society “Road to Memphis” competition and placed second in the Trocadero’s Spotlight Songwriter Competition. JEFF RAY hosts the “Roots & Resophonics” concert series at the White Squirrel Bar on the 2nd Sunday of every month, 1-3pm, featuring a unique duo performance of the most talented local and regional musicians in the American roots genre.

Dinner and drinks service starts 1 hour before showtimes. Modern Original Jazz A double header with an opening set by the Steve Kenny Quartet followed by a set by the ensemble, Le Percheron. The popular Jazz Trumpeter and his quartet open for Minnesota’s very best and longest running Avant-Guard Jazz band to kick off the 2024 Twin Cities Jazz Festival. Bryan Murray saxophonesNoah Ophoven-Baldwin cornetLevi Schwartzberg vibes Adam Linz bass Cory Healey drums The Steve Kenny Quartet is a flexible membership ensemble that focuses on select Original Compositions by Steve Kenny and a number of crowd-pleasing innovative arrangements of Jazz standards. The group has been performing on Twin Cities Jazz Club stages for 10 years and has toured the Midwest and appeared on the music series at Drake University, the Eau Clair Jazz festival, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. Steve Kenny is active in the Minnesota Jazz community as a Performer, Composer, and Curator. Steve is a founding member of ‘the illicit sextet’, “Group 47”, “What Would Monk Do?” and his own “Quartets”. Steve was the curator of a weekly Saturday Jazz series at kj’s hideaway, and before that the Black Dog Cafe, producing over 400 Saturday Night Jazz shows. His latest recording, “Quartets”, includes original compositions played by 4 separate ensembles of Twin Cities Jazz musicians, including a Live version of Steve Kenny’s Ghost Suite. in 2019 the national Jazz Journalists Association named Steve as a “Minnesota Jazz Hero” for his work in the Jazz community and lifelong devotion to the Idiom. Le Percheron is a long-standing creative project led by Adam Linz (Fat Kid Wednesdays) says “I love being able to have vibes, cornet, bass, drums. I’m a huge Don Cherry fan. One of my favorite Don Cherry groups is that European quartet with Karl Berger. I love that sound. So that’s kind of where the group started. It is an outlet for me to compose. My goal with Le Percheron is to continue to play with those guys. I don’t believe in overnight success. We’ve been a band for 8 years now, and I think we’re just getting comfortable. My goal is to keep developing the group. I love that those guys are so willing to go with me down this road. I’m not trying to push it, so we need to play all the time, either. I like to give things a lot of breathing room, so that when we do play, we have something to play about.” And now, with the addition of Bryan Murray, this group is really world-class and must be heard to be believed. You should come and hear them. And you’re right, it’s not an orchestra. More like a banjo-harp-gentle-rockin-happy machine. They don’t know what to call it, but they want everyone to know about it. The music has a lot of light in it. They try to play beautiful songs from all eras. Plus a ton of Matt’s own songs dating from the beginning of his songwriting quest right up to the present. Quillan Roe of The Roe Family Singers, Matt Wilson, Jacques Wait who touches all music in Minneapolis, and harpist Phala Tracy. Christy Costello is a mover and a shaker in the Twin Cities Music Scene. She’s a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, disc jockey, talent buyer, promoter, mother, and yogi. Hailing from the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota, she is no stranger to the great outdoors. Her music blends the ferocity and rawness of nature’s elements, the new and exciting energy of a house show, mixed with the adrenaline rush of an all-night downtown disco. Her first-rate songwriting has been showcased in previous bands like Pink Mink and Ouija Radio, as well as her raw and unforgettable stage performances in Monica LaPlante, Butchers Union, The Von Bondies, and Extraterrestrials. This is Christy’s turn to step to the front. Christy’s current lineup includes Monica LaPlante (bass), Orion Treon (guitar/synth), Austin Cecil (drums), and Matt Pahl (sax/auxiliary instrumentation). The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers. —– The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. Early Show w. The Pinkerton Raid, Michael Gay at White Squirrel
Go see a live show with The Pinkerton Raid, and songwriter Jesse James DeConto might share stories about the history and architecture of his native New England, or forest legends from the Nordic region, or Broadway-showtunes-turned-football-fight-songs from Liverpool. It’s all quite beatnik and granola, steeped in the mysticism of STAR WARS and Celtic lore, the existentialism of Kerouac, the naturalism of THE LORD OF THE RINGS, Standing Rock and Laurel Canyon, and the liberation politics of Woody Guthrie, Karl Marx and Black Lives Matter. There is a fair number of songs about trees. Trumpeter-keyboardist-disc golfer-culinary explorer Cameron Collier applies his jazz training to Jesse’s folk-pop songs. Chris Arnet is a zen master on percussion, a luscious bass on background vocals, a pro barista at the espresso machine and a lumberjack around the campfire. The trio has seven university degrees among them, and perhaps one of them is fiscally productive by Wall Street standards. Life is too short to live for money and too rich not to soak it all in. Jesse grew up on the mellow gold of his mom’s car radio and his dad’s guitar: Abbey Road, Soulsville, Greenwich Village, Motown. Surrounded by a big family of siblings, niblings, parents, his partner and two kids, Jesse settled in the vibrant indie scene of Durham, N.C., spinning out songs AMERICANA-UK calls “anthemic.” “A fine blend of Beatles-esque dreamy folk,” says AMERICANA HIGHWAYS. With their latest release of winter-themed cover songs, the band takes on those classic tones directly, bookending their sonic journey with a pop-noir version of Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” and a driving, drum-circle and brass-polished rendition of folk-rock descendants Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal.” “Radiant,” says AMERICAN SONGWRITER. The band has opened for Illiterate Light, The Ballroom Thieves, TopHouse, Driftwood, The Collection and Noah Gundersen. They’ve slotted at Daytrotter and at festivals like Shakori Hills, Albino Skunk, Beacon Bonfire and AVL Fest with artists such as River Whyless, Sunny War, Watchhouse, Tall Heights, Amythyst Kiah and The Bones of JR Jones. vocals, guitars / Jesse James DeConto trumpet, keyboard, vocals / Cameron Collier percussion, vocals / Chris Arnet +++++++ MICHAEL GAY is a Minneapolis-based country folk storyteller. Starting off as a drummer and finding his way to guitar, he was inspired by the singer-songwriters of his dad’s generation–Willie Nelson, John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker. “I dove into that world head-first,” Michael says. “I love thrift stores, and I’d just buy whatever I could find for a dollar or two that had a name on it I recognized. 70’s singer-songwriters and outlaw country was kinda what got the wheels turning because it was cheap/free at the time. But my dad’s record collection is where it started to come together for me.” Born in Denver and raised in Rochester, MN, Michael studied history at the University of Minnesota with the intention of teaching high school social studies until he moved to Minneapolis’ vibrant NE neighborhood and was drawn to the bands and songwriters playing corner bars like the 331 Club. He was hooked. Best known for his project Almighty American, Michael quickly established his place among the Twin Cities’ finest Americana artists, winning fans and media praise for his honest, accessible songwriting. “Bus Brakes,” the single from Almighty American’s first full-length album Somewhere Ride (2017) was featured on The Current, drew comparisons to Jason Isbell and Boxcar Willie and was hailed as “the real deal” (Ear to the Ground Music). A magnetic presence on stage, Michael has opened up for such acts as Margo Price, The Mavericks, Kacy & Clayton, Emily Scott Robinson and more. Going from a full band to a more stripped-down sound, Michael Gay started performing under his own name in 2020, right around the time he started recording his new album in Nashville. Coming out of those sessions with more than enough for an album, he released the single “Long, Cold Winter” — “a song that brings to mind John Prine, both through its sound and its wry, witty lyrics” (Americana UK). Released with the B-side “Good Night,” the track made a splash on folk and Americana radio. Now, with the release of his full-length album Make It Right (June 18, 2021), he solidifies his place as one of the young songwriters to watch. Produced by John James Tourville and mixed/mastered by Paul Oldham, the album evokes the heartfelt storytelling of Guy Clark and the layered musical sensibility of Josh Ritter. When not making his own music and not living through a pandemic, Michael Gay works as a tour manager and produces the Pony Rug live music video series, which has featured Minneapolis-based songwriters like Chris Koza, Vicky Emerson and The Lowest Pair’s Palmer T. Lee.
