Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $6
Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $6
Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty, mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.

Northfield Jazz Festival
Northfield Jazz Festival
Featuring ensembles led by Laura Caviani, Dave Hagedorn, and JC Sanford followed by a jam session at Imminent BrewingThe Northfield Jazz Festival is set to take off in Northfield, MN on Sunday, July 14. The core of the festival will occur in Way Park from 1 to 5pm, featuring three bands led by Northfield resident jazz musicians: pianist Laura Caviani, vibraphonist Dave Hagedorn, and trombonist JC Sanford. This will be followed by a jam session at Imminent Brewing (519 Division St S #2) in downtown Northfield hosted by Jack Schabert’s Blue Ox Trio. All events are free and open to all ages. Festival Director JC Sanford received a 2024 Southeast MN Arts Council Grant (SEMAC) to fund much of the festival and has partnered with the Friends of Way Park organization to present the event.Opening up the festival at 1pm, JC Sanford’s Imminent Standards Trio was named for his frequent appearances at Northfield’s own Imminent Brewing before the pandemic put a pause on live performances. He went on to record two volumes of recordings of jazz standards (Imminent Standards Trio, Vol. 1 & 2), and this performance will feature the personnel of Vol. I, bassist Jeff Bailey and drummer Phil Hey. When discussing this group, Scott Yanow of LA Jazz Scene says, “In addition to his fluent technique, Sanford has an expressive tone of his own, a sound that holds one’s interest in this sparse setting.” Sanford still regularly performs in New York City and internationally as a trombonist/composer/conductor and is commonly recognized as a “Rising Star” trombonist in DownBeat Magazine’s annual critics’ polls.Maintime is a group of musicians that formed in 1999 to explore the music of Keith Jarrett, Kenny Wheeler, Jan Garbarek, and other performers influenced by the ECM record label in the 1970s. The band consists of Chris Olson, guitar, Jay Epstein, drums, Kevin Clements, bass, and Dave Hagedorn, vibraphone. Andrea Canter of Jazz Police has said, “The empathy among these musicians is immediately apparent from the first chords.” Their recording In the Meantime is available on BandCamp, and they will appear at 2:30pm.For over 10 years, the Laura Caviani Trio has featured bassist Chris Bates and drummer Dave Schmalenberger. For this special performance, they will feature selections from their recordings Confluence and Mysterious Thelonious, along with recently written vocal originals fresh from Laura’s Carleton sabbatical. They also play every Sunday for the First Service at Plymouth Congregational church in Minneapolis. Pamela Espeland of MinnPost described Mysterious Thelonious as a “a joyous romp through ten of tunes, played by someone who knows them intimately yet continues to discover new things about them.” They will close out the Way Park portion of the festival at 4pm.Though only recently a graduate of St. Olaf College in May, Jack Schabert has already released two recordings as a leader with a third on the way. In additional their frequent performances at Twin Cities venues like MetroNOME and kj’s hideaway, the Blue Ox Trio have also performed at numerous private events and nursing homes throughout the state. The jam session at Imminent Brewing will occur from 6 to 9pm.There will also be food trucks: Praeliza Fusion Kitchen at Way Park and Deep Roots at Imminent Brewing. The Northfield Jazz Festival is taking tax-deductible donations for operating support and funding for this year and beyond through their fiscal sponsor Zeitgeist. Any sponsors and/or donors interested in financially supporting the festival or any volunteers looking to be involved should contact JC Sanford at northfieldjazzfestival@gmail.com. Planning for the 2025 festival is already underway. This activity is made possible through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council in cooperation with a private foundation. It is also supported by the fiscal sponsorship of Zeitgeist and generous private donors.

Jazz Beyond Boundaries with the Atlantis Quartet at Crooners
Dinner and drinks service starts 1 hour before showtimes. Modern Jazz Join us for an evening with the Atlantis Quartet- original instrumental jazz beyond boundaries. Brandon Wozniak saxophoneZacc Harris guitarChris Bates bassPeter Hennig drums Atlantis Quartet emerged as a leading voice in the twin cities’ burgeoning modern jazz scene after forming in 2006, featuring four of Minnesota’s most exciting jazz artists, saxophonist Brandon Wozniak, guitarist Zacc Harris, bassist Chris Bates, and drummer Pete Hennig. Initially formed as a weekly composing collective to workshop, create and explore fresh and original sounds in the heart of and on the edges of the jazz idiom. The quartet soon realized that they had developed a group sound and their blend of complexity and accessibility has proven a perfect fit for all listeners. Atlantis Quartet has released five albums to date, Hello Human (Shifting Paradigm Records, 2018) Expansion (SPR, 2013), Lines In the Sand (2011), Animal Progress (2009), and Again, Too Soon (2007). The band headlined the opening night of the 2014 Twin Cities Jazz Festival and performed on the main stage at the Iowa City Jazz Fest along with touring throughout the Midwest and East Coast. They were named Best Jazz Artist by the Star Tribune in 2012 and also by the City Pages in 2011. In 2015, Atlantis Quartet was awarded the McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists. “No jazz band in the Twin Cities is on the prowl both creatively and in gaining national recognition quite like the Atlantis Quartet…Each player’s ideas and strengths seem to infiltrate the others’ consciousness, so the music evolves as a constantly shifting mosaic of textures, rhythmic patterns, and tonal colors…This is a band without limits.” atlantisquartet.com

She teamed with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett in 2012 for the long-running Midtown Jazz at Midday concert series at Saint Peter’s and debuted her show Skyscraper Wits in London and New York in 2015. She has made three appearances at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall for the New York Cabaret Convention, presented by the Mabel Mercer Foundation. Maud received a Next Step Grant from the McKnight Foundation in 2015 and is the recipient of four Artist Initiative grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, one of which supported the research for her album comprised of compositions by Broadway composer Michael (Mickey) Leonard. Her newest recording is devoted to the music of her mentor, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, which earned a 2024 Bistro Award. “Her vocal style is so warm, compelling and intimate—it’s clear she cares about the words and telling the story, with clarity and without artifice—almost a lost art these days.” –Michael Feinstein MaudHixson.com

Dinner and drinks service starts 1 hour before showtimes. Funky Folk Rock with Latin Influences Yazmin & Beat Zero made their Crooner’s debut last year. Now they are back by popular demand, this time to the MainStage with special guest vocalist Prudence Johnson. You will be swept away by a riveting fusion of Latin-jazz, Funk and Folk/Rock, all driven by the heartfelt songwriting of Yazmin: vocalist, pianist and composer of the group. Yazmin’s songwriting is honest and soul-baring, diving into subjects such as creative burnout, finding one’s life purpose, immigration, and above all, love. Along with these original songs, Yazmin & Beat Zero also interpret familiar classics with their own twist. You may be equally called to dance or to shed a tear before the night is over. Yazmin vocals, keyboardsPrudence Johnson vocalsAlvaro Benavides bassAndrew Gillespie drums Yazmin, who currently resides in New Orleans, LA, was born and raised in Northern Wisconsin by professional musician parents. At age 12 after attending a concert by Miami-based Cuban-jazz group Tiempo Libre, she instantly fell in love with Afro-Cuban jazz and dedicated herself wholeheartedly to learning about these rich traditions. Her passion for this music lead her to study privately for over a decade with author, educator and Latin music connoisseur Rebeca Mauleón-Santana. Prudence Johnson’s long and happy career as a singer, writer, and teacher has landed her on the musical theatre stage, in two feature films, (A River Runs Through It, A Prairie Home Companion) national radio, (several long stints on A Prairie Home Companion) and on concert stages across North America and occasionally Europe. She has released more than a dozen recordings, including albums dedicated to the music of Hoagy Carmichael, Greg Brown, and a collection of international lullabies. ” …She was incredible. I sat out on the porch, up the hill a little bit, and I was transported to another place. How brilliant is she? She is absolutely fantastic. What a voice, what a keyboard player, just absolutely extraordinary!” -Nanci Griffith (Singer-Songwriter) www.yazminmusic.com
