An Evening with Herbie Hancock
“Herbie Hancock stands as our greatest living jazz artist.” – Washington Post Herbie Hancock – Keys Terence Blanchard – Trumpet James Genus – Bass Lionel Loueke – Guitar & vocals Jaylen Petinaud – Drums Now in the seventh decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings, followed by his work in the 70s — with record-breaking albums such as Headhunters — that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. Rockit and Future Shock marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period, he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P. Hancock received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for River: The Joni Letters, and two 2011 Grammy Awards for the globally collaborative album The Imagine Project. Hancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as Institute Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 2011 Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and in December of 2013, received a Kennedy Center Honor. His memoirs, Herbie Hancock: Possibilities, were published by Viking in 2014, and in February 2016 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Hancock is currently in the studio at work on a new album. Recommended for Fans of Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. 📸: Danny Clinch

Phillip-Michael Scales: Dive Bar Soul
Main Stage Showroom 6161 Hwy 65 NE, Minneapolis, MN, United StatesDinner and cocktail seating and service begins 90 minutes before showtimes. Dive Bar Soul Scales, who has dubbed his particular style of Blues-meets-Songwriting, “Dive Bar Soul,” has performed across the globe, sharing stages with Keb’ Mo’, Fantastic Negrito, Jerry Cantrell, Anderson East, Guster, Milky Chance, The Record Company and more, and performed on The Ellen DeGeneres show during its final season. Phillip-Michael Scales: Guitar, Vocals Alex Piazza: Bass Alfonzo “Spanky” Jones: Drums Garrett Waite: Guitar In Chicago, Scales honed his craft, playing 308 gigs in 2018 and crediting the city with teaching him how to hustle. This drive carried him to Nashville, where he gained traction on the radio station; Lightning 100, released his debut album Sinner-Songwriter, toured Europe, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and opened national tours for Keb’ Mo’ and Caravan Palace. Grammy-nominated producer Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive, Allison Russell, and Bahamas) later joined forces with Scales to produce Good to Be Here. Without a label or viral hit, Scales has built his career through relentless effort—long drives behind tour busses, self-management, and learning the business firsthand. His music channels the grit of Stax-era soul, cataloging the journey of building a dream brick by brick. Make no mistake there is an undercurrent of fun throughout whether he’s finding love in “Can’t Get Enough” or getting his swagger back in “Be My Own Man.” As Scales puts it: “I wouldn’t say that I’ve ‘arrived,’ but… it’s good to be here.” “Scales soulfully dishes out lyrics that speak to his family legacy—and the one that he wants to forge for himself.” – PopMatters phillipmichaelscales.com This show is presented by KFAI
