The MnBS participates in the International Blues Challenge by sending a band and a solo/duo act to the competition which usually held in January. We have had great success as several of our bands and solo/duos have reached the semifinals and two of our acts have reached the finals. Our most recent band competitor placed third in the worldwide competition. As part of the competition every IBC band or solo/duo acts competes the first two nights of the competition in two different locales on Beale Street in Memphis. The IBC judges select an act from each location to compete against other semi finalists to choose who goes on to the finals on Saturday! The Challenge also features a “Best Self Produced CD” contest and offers a “Youth Showcase” to encourage young up and coming blues artists. MnBS has also been recognized for our “large contingent” of fans at IBC week in Memphis! |

![]() Dinner and cocktail seating and service begins 90 minutes before showtimes. Salsa with Strings! Take a musical journey with Charanga Tropical and its repertoire of romantic boleros, modern salsa, and Cuban classics. The ten band members perform as a ‘charanga,’ one of the few in the United States, with an instrumentation that dates back to the roots of Cuban music. The sound combines violins, flute, vocals, and full Latin rhythm section. The beautiful blend of smooth strings and Caribbean beats inspires visions of Old Havana at sunset. Damian Rodriquez: Vocals Frank Rivery: Vocals Doug Little: Flute) Aja Majkrzak: Violin Ana Frómeta: Violin Kristi Petraborg: Viola Mariano Flores: Timbales Andrew Gillespie: Congas Joe Strachan: Piano Graydon Peterson: Bass Founded in 2006 by flutist and bandleader Doug Little, Charanga Tropical brings together Cuban and American musicians whose collective accomplishments include international tours, multiple CDs, major grant awards, Latin Grammy nominations, and more. Charanga Tropical has appeared at major festivals and venues throughout the Midwest. In 2019 the band backed up Grammy-winning Cuban singer Mayito Rivera. In 2015 Charanga Tropical became the only American group ever to perform at Havana’s International Danzón Festival. While on tour they played on national Cuban radio and at venues in and around Havana. Charanga also recorded in the same historic Havana studio that produced Buena Vista Social Club. The resulting CD ‘In Cuba’ captures the magic of that legendary studio space and landmark tour. “On a hot summer day no one else can make downtown Minneapolis feel so much like South Beach, Miami.” –Star Tribune CharangaTropical.com |

For 8 years they've been rockin' the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations in South Dakota and this year they are expanding to Minnesota, providing camps in Leech Lake, Lower Sioux, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Kith + Kin Chorus is honored to help support RTRMN in launching this new chapter!Kith + Kin ChorusKith + Kin Chorus is an uncommon community choir in the Twin Cities, open to singers of all skill levels, and 75 singers strong. If you can match a pitch and carry a tune, you can join! Voices are the original instrument and few things are more unifying than voices, raised together in song.Led by founder Rachel Ries (of Her Crooked Heart), K+K Chorus aims to nurture a welcoming, joyful environment where anyone who longs to sing in a choir again (or for the first time!) can. Singers aren't required to be able to read music or have theory training. Songs are taught with the help of sheet music and reference recordings. The song material is a wide, secular mix of classic & indie rock, pop, folk and whatever else inspires, arranged by Rachel and members of the choir. To keep up with growing demand, this past year K+K expanded their programming with occasional Open Sings and the Crash Course Chorus, a 6-week choir session that has already engaged over 200 singers.K + K Chorus gives back to the Twin Cities community by holding a fundraising concert at the end of each season, proceeds of which go to local organizations that strive to make our Cities better, safer, healthier places for all. Over the course of 6 seasons they've raised $57,000 for local organizations like Raíces Sagradas, RECLAIM!, Women of Nations' Eagle's Nest Shelter, Spare Key, Open Arms and CAPI.Let’s fill this hurting world with harmony!LAAMARLAAMAR is the latest project led by Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter, saxophonist, and composer Geoffrey Lamar Wilson. Former frontman of Brooklyn-based Jus Post Bellum, Wilson is also known for his multilayered looped saxophone performances and catchy podcast ditties (Terrible, Thanks for Asking). The band’s debut EP “Flowers” blends Wilson’s idiomatic inspirations bridging folk, soul, R&B, and country with a constant ear toward racial and social justice issues and the shared human experience.“In the EP's deceptively sweet and warm title track, he relays a memory of his mother ‘lighting candles and putting flowers on the boulevard’ in memory of another dead man of color. In the standout track getting airplay on the Current, “Home to My Baby,” he relays his personal fears of getting pulled over by police,” writes Chris Riemenschneider of the Star Tribune. Recent acclaim for LAAMAR includes debut single “Home to My Baby” being named KAXE’s “Best Song” of 2023 and a nod as one of First Avenue’s Best New Bands.“With Flowers,” writes Malachy Koons of KAXE, “LAAMAR has crafted a stunning debut that does not shy away from difficult topics. The new EP features four instantly catchy songs, with each taking a different approach to issues of racial and social justice.”To learn more about LAAMAR:Visit his Linktree page here |

I am a Minneapolis based musician that has released numerous albums, EP’s, and singles with my former bands including naked bob, Dog Day, Brittle, and most recently Ada Jane. I have also released several solo records under my own name. Opening for acts as diverse as Jawbreaker, The Offspring, John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats, Grant Hart, and Evan Dando. The Beavers Bio: The Beavers are a folk-grassy group of musical friends. Together, they play a mix of originals and covers ranging from old-timey to ’70s and ’80s hidden treasures, and maybe a couple more they picked up on the town. Sidewalk Diamonds Bio: Forged through friendship and a love of music, Sidewalk Diamonds play what they call “Garage Americana,” a soulful blend of rock and Americana with a raucous spirit. The band’s name is a nod to the John Prine lyric, “from the diamonds on the sidewalk, to the dirt in the gutter,” encapsulating the group’s balance between grit and grace. That duality shines through in their music, led by the unmistakable vocal harmonies of Beth and Tony, who share a mutual admiration for artists like Neko Case and PJ Harvey. |

Featuring four songwriters, four singers, and one godlike keyboard player, they create original compositions that capture emotions and visions through their own unique musical lens. Smile for The Cameras!” Anything You Want: “ANYTHING YOU WANT is a new psychedelic alt-rock band making waves on the Twin Cities scene. What started as a seed in the mind of singer-songwriter Lena Nine has grown into a collaborative expression inspired by American folk, British pop, and the universal ethos of DIY music. The band is currently recording their debut album.” Electric Church: “A power trio based out of Minneapolis, and born swaddled in an eruption of sound. The sound of which was built far away, built to vibrate, built to console your mind. From where they come from, nobody knows. Just let the sound wash over and over you. Each member of the quartet sings lead and harmony parts as well as contributes to the lyrics, which offer authentic, intelligent songwriting with hard-hitting hooks - bending the rules and blurring the lines between bluegrass, folk, americana, with notes of country, blues, and funk.Local old time/bluegrass project, Steam Machine kicks the night off!ArkansauceArkansauce is a genre-hopping, four piece string band from northwest Arkansas, bending the rules and blurring the lines between bluegrass, newgrass, folk, americana, with notes of country, blues, and funk. With a loyal following growing every day in the Natural State and along their tour routes, the band is proud to be stepping into a hard-driving sound unique to the Arkansas quartet. The hard-working musicians have been beating up the road playing shows from Colorado to Connecticut over the last several years in addition to two tours in Europe. They supported Yonder Mountain String Band for a leg of their summer tour in 2019, and played mainstage spots on festivals with bands (including but not limited to) Greensky Bluegrass, Railroad Earth, The Del McCoury Band, Billy Strings, Leftover Salmon, Tauk, The Wood Brothers, and shared the stage with the legendary Sam Bush as a guest. This progressive string quartet features Tom Andersen on bass, guitarist Zac Archuleta, Ethan Bush on mandolin, and Adams Collins on banjo. An Arkansauce show is riddled with improvisational guitar, banjo, and mandolin leads, paired with powerful harmonies and heart-felt songwriting, all held together by deep foot-stompin’ bass grooves. There’s an undeniably intimate connection between the band and their fans that’s contagious and leaves everyone in front of, and on the stage wanting more. Arkansauce holds their head high, as they look forward to enjoying everything life and music has in store for them and their fans.“This is high-octane stuff, meticulously rendered & with lots of spirit... The ensemble vocals add authenticity to the bluegrass fire. Everything is well-played & optimistic... Their compositions have clarity & distinction... They have a whirling, lively groove. The lyrics aren’t cliched & the words are held down by the gravity of the tight melodies... The late Jerry Garcia (The Grateful Dead) who played with Old and In the Way with David Grisman, Vassar Clements & Pete Rowan would feel at home with these boys.”—Americana Highways, Jon Apice. To learn more about Arkansauce:Visit their website hereSteam MachineSteam Machine is an old time/bluegrass project fronted by award winning Minneapolis fiddler AJ Srubas and Twin Cities old time music & dance instigator Rina Rossi on guitar. A shortlist of spectacular musicians perform with the band on banjo and bass. Two time Appalachian String Band Music Festival (Clifftop) Traditional Band Contest finalists, they have been touring the midwest and country since 2018, performing at diverse venues from roots music hubs to bluegrass and Americana festivals, and teaching at traditional music epicenters across the country. While not purists, Steam Machine does listen closely to the “old stuff” and strives to capture the essence of what makes these tunes and songs special, as they hear it. The project continues to be an evolving vehicle for playing music they love and honoring the brilliance left behind by musical heroes like Lyman Enloe, Cyril Stinnett and more. At home playing for both old time/bluegrass loving crowds and listeners new to these sounds, Steam Machine aspires to keep midwest influenced old time bluegrass music alive and well wherever they go.“Virtousic…the midwest has such impressive old-time/bluegrass talent, and Steam Machine is exhibit A!” - Adventures in AmericanaTo learn more about Steam Machine:Visit their website here |

They released their Debut EP “Intersections” in 2024 which has garnered substantial College and Freeform radio airplay across the U.S. and beyond. Their sound blends jangly guitars enveloped by razor sharp angular guitar lines, a driving rhythm section and unforgettable melodies. Sunken Planes consists of Michael Banning-Guitars/Vocals, Jacob Poling- Guitars, Joel Almberg- Bass Guitar, Nick Blake-Drums. Drawing from the deep well of classic indie, Field Hospitals connect early American indie bands like REM and the Feelies with influences from British Commonwealth legends the Go-Betweens, the Clean, and Teenage Fanclub. The result is a sound that will appeal to fans of recent critically acclaimed bands like the Tubs, Sharp Pins, Ducks Ltd., and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.
