Ron Sexsmith at Dakota
Ron Sexsmith at Dakota
“nimble wordplay… wistful and gorgeous” – American Songwriter Ron Sexsmith is a three-time Juno award-winning singer songwriter from Ontario. The melodic songs of the 1960s drew Ron to music from an early age. There, he heard them on the radio and his mom’s record collection. Further, Buddy Holly and Elton John were his earliest musical heroes. He always loved to sing and started playing guitar at age fourteen. However, he didn’t truly become a songwriter until he was twenty-one. Ron moved his young family to Toronto to further pursue a career in music. There, he worked as a courier by day, while performing in the clubs by night. He formed the band Ron Sexsmith and The Uncool and started gaining attention from music label executives. But all passed on signing him. In 1991 he released his first full-length album, Grand Opera Lane. The Canadian music industry rejected the album, although it found its way to Los Angeles. Then, Ron signed his first music publishing deal followed by a recording contract. Sexsmith released his self-titled label debut album in 1995. The melancholic tone and sparse acoustic arrangements of the album met with disapproval from his label. However, an enthusiastic endorsement from Elvis Costello drew media attention and the album was declared a critical success. Rolling Stone wrote: “He just may be the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson.” He has built a steadfast reputation with critics and with some of his own songwriting heroes. These include Elton John, Ray Davies, John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney. Additionally, Sexsmith is loved for his characteristically honest, sensitive, and enduring approach to the songwriting craft. Recommended for fans of Tim Hardin, Pernice Brothers, Del Amitri and Martin Sexton. 📸: Kerry Vergeer

Drop Deadlift Gorgeous brings athletes, organizations, and our community together to envision a more inclusive and joyful world through friendly competition – all while raising funds for trans+ and gender-expansive communities. To date, DDG has raised over $200,000 for trans+ communities in the Midwest. — Drop Deadlift Gorgeous is free for spectators and open to the community. Here’s a peek at what you can expect this year: — Lifting @ The Hook and Ladder Theater | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM · Watch 150 lifters angling for a big deadlift PR, showing off costumes and maybe sharing other talents on our outdoor platform · Laugh and cheer with our fabulous emcees Carrie Bain (The Fat Narrative Project) and Emily Lund (Howdy Partner Dance) · Snag some always-incredible DDG merch celebrating this year’s fishing theme · Head inside The Hook and Ladder to enter a prize raffle, meet our sponsors, grab a drink, or just take a break from the sensory overload · Celebrate with friends by listening to tracks spun by DJ Jaycee Lives & DJ Nola Rave — After Party @ Arbeiter Brewing | 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM · Shop and chat with 28+ local vendors and community organizations · Snap up a snack from our food trucks: Eggroll Queen, Frios Gourmet Pops (including protein-enhanced options!), Habanero Tacos, and Vegan Witt · Grab a special-edition DDG beer (or fun N/A drink) from Arbeiter and toast to another great Drop Deadlift Gorgeous · Stick around for line dance lessons from emcee, Emily Lund of Howdy Partner Dance and tracks spun by DJ Ori The Ghost This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
