Minneapolis and Houston-based guitarist and composer, Will Schmid, has been performing his original music for just over a decade. Before moving to Texas for PhD studies at Rice University in 2020, his duos, trios, and quartets frequently headlined popular Minnesota jazz series including Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog, Saturday Night Jazz at KJ’s Hideaway, and the illicit Jazz Workshop. He has led ensembles in multiple appearances at the Twin Cities and Iowa City Jazz Festivals, and at nationally renowned venues such as Brookyln’s ShapeShifter Lab and Cleveland’s BOP STOP at The Music Settlement. He has played with Jake Baldwin, Michelle Kinney, Dean Magraw, and Greg Lewis, and his bands have opened for Eric Kamau Grávátt and Dave King. As a member of the Twin Cities modern jazz collective SPACE, he has released two studio albums of original music: 2019’s “Non-Trivial Problem” and 2022’s “The Approaching Coast.” Debuting at Icehouse Minneapolis last summer, Schmid’s new quartet for March 9 features pianist Patrick Adkins, bassist Alma Engebretson, and drummer Tarek Abdelqader.
Curators Note : This evening features two exceptional still-in-college cats who are both examples of something freakish that happens in Minnesota in the past decade or so with the continual emergence of full-fledged Jazz performing ability manifesting in individuals so very early in their careers. You can hear the freshness and excitement in their playing. Catch them now before life gets in the way of these two amazing instrumentalists.
