Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $5 at Aster
Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty, mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.

Mary Bue & The Scarlet Goodbye at Bryant Lake Bowl
Mary Bue & The Scarlet Goodbye at Bryant Lake Bowl
Join Mary Bue & friends for a night of indie-pop and Americana, deep & sweet, elegant & crass, from City Pages Best Songwriter 2020.Mary Bue is a songwriter, international retreat guide, and yoga teacher based out of Minneapolis, often roaming this beautiful world. Named Best Songwriter of 2020 by City Pages, her music touches upon archetypal themes of the human condition: love, loss, survival, dreams, and the natural world. A longtime student of yoga and psychology, Mary weaves sacred subject matter into her songs, seeking of deeper levels of consciousness, and concern for the environment mixed into oft-crass, real-world hue. Mary is currently working on her 9th album The Wildness of Living and Dying to be released in spring 2024.2020’s The World is Your Lover – produced by the Suburbs’ Steve Price – is a synthesis of her releases of the past 20+ years, merging pianos and guitars, spiritual longing, and real-world sorrow. Her previous albums achingly express life in melancholy piano-poems, yet in 2015 Mary risked a genre switch to aggressive electric guitars, concise lyricism, and a nod to 90’s grunge."Every scene has its bright fleeting highlights, its fickle wave of each generation, and its longtime anchors, but through the scene, I’ve known and loved, in Duluth MN, Mary Bue has been the thread that runs so effortlessly through its heart, hands, and soul. She arrived boldly and prolific. I have heard her piano climbing out the window and cascading down the central hillside neighborhood in the summer and the howl of her guitar muffled in the basement in winter. Her new recording is a triumph not only as a reflection and victory over adversity but as architecture for healing and change." — Alan Sparhawk (LOW)"Prolific, lyrical, and gritty, Mary’s performances are warm and laced with quirky humor and stories of her adventures (and misadventures). A survivor and advocate, Mary is often invited to perform and speak about her healing process surrounding #MeToo of which she shares in her song “Petty Misdemeanor” - (The Majesty of Beasts, 2017).“Duluth-based for most of her prolific career, Bue moved to Minneapolis in 2017 and released a near-perfect EP, The Majesty of Beasts. After a three-year wait, a full-length follow-up, The World Is Your Lover, is due out this August, and it expands on everything that Bue does so well. Her lyrics are free-spirited but wary, resolute in the aftermath of failed and sometimes abusive love affairs, and her singer-songwriter’s sense of hooky structure gives her band a solid base to work up some sharp arrangements. How good is Bue? If you didn’t know the Tom Petty song on the new album was a cover, you’d think she wrote it.” — City PagesNot one to bow to popular music trends, Mary has stayed true to her own sound, evolving and about to emerge, butterfly-like, with support from her band collaboration The Monarchy (a nod to the Monarch butterflies species) feat. Steve Price, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Richard Medek, Shannon Frid-Rubin, Julia Floberg.Best Songwriter 2020WebsitePatreonInstagramFacebookTwitterYouTubeThe Scarlet Goodbye, labeled “the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota Music History”, is the creative combination of Daniel Murphy and Jeff Arundel.Murphy, pivotal in the launch of both Soul Asylum and the super-group Golden Smog, had stepped away from the game in 2012, after 30 years of recording and touring. A chance meeting with mellow Singer-Songwriter Jeff Arundel led the duo, whose careers spanned the same time frame but had essentially no other resemblance, to start writing and recording. With the first collaboration, “Paris”, they realized that they were onto something, as Murphy shoved Arundel into a swagger, and Arundel tip-toed Murphy onto revealing some vulnerabilities. Meeting in an attic studio during the Pandemic, Murphy and Arundel fashioned a collection of songs that producer John Fields, who was brought in to mix the record, calls “both timeless and unique, part Rolling Stones and part Townes Van Zandt”.Over 2022, The Scarlet Goodbye has released three singles and a video to critical acclaim and has performed on stages large and small, bracing for a March 2023 release of their full-length record “Hope’s Eternal”, on Ingrooves/Universal, via Nashville’s The Label Group.WebsiteFacebookInstagramTickets are $15 in advance / $20 at the door. 'WAR ALL THE TIME' LIVE with Rival Schools and Many Eyes Thursday is a band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. Formed in 1998 and with worldwide album sales in the millions, the band has released six critically acclaimed albums. Their September 2003 Island Def Jam record, War All The Time, is considered one of the pivotal and most influential post-hardcore albums of the aughts. The story of the record and the major label feeding frenzy of the period that saw Thursday, Green Day, At The Drive In, Blink 182, and My Chemical Romance all getting signed was documented in Dan Ozzi’s New York Times best-selling book, Sellout, of which a picture of Thursday graced the front cover. After a monumental 2022 that saw Thursday play main support to My Chemical Romance in sold-out arenas all the way from Barclays Center in Brooklyn to The Forum in Los Angeles and embarking on their own 45 date sold out club and theatre tour (with the mighty Cursive in tow), 2023 was supposed to be a year of rest for post-hardcore architects Thursday. Rhythm section Tucker Rule and Tim Payne released and toured their prolific L.S. Dunes album, Steve Pedulla remained highly sought after in the world of music videos and television production, whilst vocalist Geoff Rickly not only toured the USA as a solo artist and internationally as a member of No Devotion, but also released his debut (best-selling) novel in the interim. Despite all this, 2023 saw the band play select dates as co-headliner of the So What Festival as well as marquee appearances at the Adjacent, Furnace, and Riot Festivals as well as headlines appearances with Sparta, Braid, Koyo, and Gel in tow. After the immense success of the 20th birthday party for their War All The Time record, where they rented a classic Hudson River-Boat and invited 1,200 of their closest friends to join them (it sold out in minutes) in sailing from Harlem to the historic Palisades Cliffs. This maiden voyage was then complemented by a packed-to-the-gills performance of War All The Time at Starland Ballroom. As they played the album in full, it was apparent they needed to do more. Renowned for having their fingers on the pulse of creativity, Thursday has a long history of touring with groundbreaking acts in tow. Coheed and Cambria, Thrice, Poison The Well, AFI, Portugal The Man, Murder By Death, Touche Amore, Bring Me The Horizon, Circa Survive, and The Gaslight Anthem have all been invited to share stages with them in the past, so it was of utmost importance to invite only the finest of friends and the best of bands to accompany them on the 21st Birthday Tour for War All The Time. With decades of friendship and a millennium of songs intertwined, this bill is going to be a force to be reckoned with. It’s not just a birthday party for a specific album, it’s also a celebration of the past, present and what is to come.

Mark Joseph & The American Soul “Palisade Peach” World Tour (w/ opener New Salty Dog) at West Theatre
Mark Joseph is as authentically American as you would want, and as heartfelt and passionate as you can get. Joseph dings all the bells on any given night, indeed darn near every night, chalking up 200+ shows a year, criss-crossing the heartland, from CO to MS, from NY to LA, as the hardest working family music man you will ever know. He is also piling up the albums, roughly one a year, churning out consistently high quality product. All the while he is absorbing and cherrypicking the best America has to offer and finding his unique voice as an artist. American Soul is a fitting brand for Mark Joseph; since his 2017 album by that title, he has charted a relentless and soulful course through America, and Americana, from blues to country to psychedelic rock and everything in between. On his newest offering, “Palisade Peach,” Joseph’s fourth full-length album, he continues this journey, from his soul, straight to your heart. It is a “blues” album in the truest sense of the word, with familiar 12 bar strains that echo the march of American music from the rural southern US up the Mississippi, to cities like Minneapolis and Chicago where it found a wider urban audience; it is the blues that has given rise to “rhythm and blues,” to “soul” and to “rock and roll.” You find it all on “Palisade Peach.” Tickets are $15 and $20 depending on seating. Show starts at 7:30pm Doors open at 6:30pm ALL SALES ARE FINAL

Since forming in 2006, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude, original songs and a wide range of influences far beyond Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs.
In a genre created and dominated by artists from the South, The High 48s were born and raised in the Upper Midwest. And in a music scene where playing standards is the norm, The High 48s are a band of songwriters who perform their own material in addition to the “festival favorites.”

Haters Club, Whiskey Rock N Roll Club and Scott Hefte and the Bury ’em Deep at Palmers
Enjoy all the flavors this Saturday night: psychedelic Americana, pure rock-and-roll right off the snake farm, and harmony-driven pop-rock.HATERS CLUB is still flying high after the release of their snarkily-titled 2023 EP - RIYH. The album was featured in the Current's March Scouting Report, Adventures in Americana, and in Dispatch. "Together they've crafted a set of songs that are sonically diverse, but carry the common thread of Kukielka's enigmatic, reflective lyrics and standout vocals," writes AIA. Haters Club was formed in 2010 by friends and former Eclectone labelmates DJ Kukielka, Ted Held, and Amy Rajkowski. After releasing their first EP - The Golden Age of Haters Club - in 2012, the band split up for a long break. Kukielka and Held brought the band back in 2022 with new drummer Erik Olson and former Hojas Rojas bass player Donovan Johnson. Don't let the name fool you, this band revels in sweet harmonies and clever guitars, and connects with audiences wherever they play.WRRC~Loud sounds from the MPLS rock ‘n’ roll underground! Although only a three piece, fuzzed-out rock outfit Whiskey Rock ‘n’ Roll Club MPLS makes a bigger and badder sound—boogie with a bit of bite!—than groups one-and-a-half their size. The same over-performance also holds for Whiskey’s live show bar tabs, making the “Club meeting” live shows a favorite for fans of loud and fast music and bartenders alike. Whiskey Rock ‘n’ Roll Club MPLS is Taylor Carik (vox, guitar), Mark Devaraj (drums, also of Tromp le Monde, High on Stress, Heavy Sixers), and Andy Holmaas (bass, also plays with David Allen and others).Whiskey RRC MPLS have opened for national acts at The Turf Club and 7th St Entry, played the Roots, Rock & Deep Blues Festival, the Stone Arch Festival, SoundUnseen Opening Party, 612 Brewing Outdoor Summer Music Series, Hennepin 5 to 10 Series, and more.SCOTT HEFTE AND THE BURY 'EM DEEP From the ashes of such bands as Seymore Saves the World, Superdanger, Me and My Arrow, and Stolyette, rises a dark and brooding indie-western soundtrack for your apocalypse. Scott Hefte and the Bury ‘em Deep have combined to create hellish landscapes of a dystopian nightmare while not forgetting the righteous influences of old school country, indie-pop, and noise rock. The resulting sound is one of Johnny Cash, Phil Collins, and Godspeed You Black Emperor, fighting a bloodless three way cage match for superiority. No one wins but you, when you dig the music of Scott Hefte and the Bury ‘em Deep.
