Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $6
Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty, mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.

Lamont Cranston at Crooners
Dinner and cocktail seating and service begins 90 minutes before showtimes. Local Legend Rockers Pat (Lamont) Hayes, with his brother Larry, founded Lamont Cranston in 1969. This Minneapolis-based band has a rich history in the music scene, having recorded 14 albums and written and produced a number of hit songs, including the chart topping “Upper Mississippi Shakedown.” The Cranstons have shared bills with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charles Brown, Buddy Guy, Keb Mo, Jonny Lang, Little Feat, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Animals II, Kansas, Yes, Bonnie Raitt, The Blues Brothers and many more. One of the biggest thrills was opening for The Rolling Stones on a leg of their North American tour in 1981. In 2010, the band was inducted into the Mid-America Music Hall Of Fame. The band has also been featured regularly on Dan Aykroyd’s House Of Blues Radio Show. In fact, Aykroyd (the original Blues Brother!) is quite fond of Cranston, proclaiming, “No one infects venues with the party virus quite like Pat Hayes and The Lamont Cranston Blues Band. They’ve always been my favorite.” “It’s great to hear Lamont Cranston back on the scene. Pat Hayes plays some of the baddest harp and guitar around!” –Bonnie Raitt LamontCranston.com

Their residencies at bars like the Wrigleyville Tap and Augenblick became legendary for the sheer volume, speed and energy they brought to this task. After an early and particularly deranged appearance at SXSW, Rolling Stone dubbed the Wacos “Clash meets Cash” and they unleashed a fistful of ferocious albums and endlessly entertaining live gigs that defined the Insurgent Country movement.Every night is still Friday night for the WACO BROTHERS but these new songs lace that reckless exuberance with a more sober awareness of the tsunami of cynical corruption & materialism that infects our everyday existence. BEST THAT MONEY CAN BUY rips its verses from what’s left of honest journalism while IN THE DARK provides a requiem for functioning democracy AND boasts the best twin-lead guitar solo since Thin Lizzy. The album ends with NOWHERE TO RUN a deceptively gentle dance number (inspired by a night on the Outlaw Country Cruise where the Wacos backed up their hero Lee “Scratch” Perry) that presents the struggle for social and economic justice as neverending. GEORGE WALKS WITH JESUS is a song about George Jones walking with Jesus.“It's the mission of the Waco Brothers — a Chicago-based outfit that Langford started in the mid-90s — to bring blood, sweat, and tears back into country music.… They have a rather romantic view; I doubt that, this side of Merle Haggard, any American country act has written a furious hymn to organized labor like the song "Plenty Tough and Union Made.” - KenTucker, NPRThe WACO BROTHERS lost their powerhouse drummer Joe Camarillo to a stroke in January 2021 and it took some time to regroup. They’d often been joined onstage by violinist Jean Cook and drummer Dan Massey (ex-Robbie Fulks) who had deputized for Joe for years, so now the time seemed right to add them both as permanent members. The current line-up is:Jean Cook – violin & vocalsTracey Dear – mandolin & vocalsAlan Jesus George Jones Mr. Spanky Captain Giggles Sproketts Doughty Vega – bass & vocalsJon Langford – guitar & vocalsDan Massey – drumsDean Schlabowske – guitar & vocalsTHE MEN THAT GOD FORGOT is the 10th Waco Brothers full length album and was recorded with Mike Hagler at Kingsize Soundlabs in Chicago in 2022. The cinematic brass parts were arranged and performed by longtime collaborator Max Crawford with Dave Smith. Other Waco Cousins appearing are Barkley Mckay on piano and organ, Patty Vega on jingling tambourine and Andre Michot of the Lost Bayou Ramblers on accordion.“Where does this pack of goofy bastards get off thinking they can one-up our national heritage? But they do, damn it. Jon Langford has always utilized his extracurricular time with the Wacos to exorcise the C&W demons that have lurked in his work with the Mekons since the 1980s. Where great Mekons albums integrate a vaguely folkish, space cowboy vibe, the Waco Brothers sound like real-deal ten-gallon hatters with a grouchy streak and a subscription to The Nation. Sure, there's a William Blake nod on occasion, but mostly, Langford and co-singer/songwriter Dean Schlabowske invoke the spirit of the common man, crank up the hollow-body guitars and rock their wary ways.” - Pitchfork"The Waco Boys! The Rainbow Men!” - Lee “Scratch’ PerryTo learn more about the Waco Brothers:Visit their website hereJAKE LA BOTZJake La Botz’s rough and tumble Chicago upbringing took him from juvenile delinquency and punk rock to learning blues from the last of the Delta bluesmen. From there, with guitar in tow, he made his way across the U.S.A. until he hit the end of the line in Hollywood where an improbable acting career began to unfold.After getting clean from heroin at thirty years old, La Botz became a Buddhist meditation practitioner and teacher. He also took his bluesy guitar licks to the Greater Mt. Zion Church in South Central L.A. where he steeped himself in gospel music. Ever since then La Botz has been putting out his own brand of Gospel-noir Americana. The eccentric stories, characters, and underlying spiritual messages often heard in his songs come to a head on his latest album Hair on Fire.Among more than twenty film and TV credits, La Botz has acted in True Detective, Rambo, and On the Road. His most recent film, D.O.A., stars fellow musician John Doe from the punk band X.Beyond music and acting, La Botz is also a writer. A collection of short fiction is forthcoming from Cornerstone Press and a graphic memoir is also in the works.To learn more about Jake La Botz:Visit his Instagram page hereJON LANGFORD & ALICE SPENCER OF THE BRIGHT SHINERSJon Langford's been in more bands than you have digits- and that's true even if you were born with a few extras! From his early days in Mekons, Delta 5,Three Johns and even Sisters Of Mercy to a veritable explosion of one-off recordings and performances with more names than we could ever hope to list in full. A Wikipedia description for this group,The Bright Shiners (described therein as 'circa 2022 through at least 2023,in Northern California') provides some sense of the complex taxonomy needed just to keep track of Jon's massive oeuvre. Happily, that's an understated description of a serious new outlet for his endless creativity, and The Bright Shiners' recording activities have produced a full album, Where It Really Starts, the first recording in a collaboration with Tamineh Gueramy, Alice Spencer,and Jon's frequent musical partner, John Szymanski.Jon's never sung or written better, and the sense that the band realised they were onto something great is palpable in an instant. Each song is a minimalistic jewel-there's nothing here that doesn't need to be-yet the album is unsparing of aptly astonishing adornment - wonderful harmonies, horns, mellotron, bowed guitar, piano.looped percussion and more), by our reckoning this is one of Jon's finest works of art and his best outfit outside The Mekons themselves.To learn more about Jon Langford:Visit his Instagram page hereTo learn more about Alice Spencer:Visit her Instagram page hereSPONSORED BY

George Faber is a veteran Minneapolis singer/songwriter/performer with a colorful 30-year music career. Born in Champaign, IL, Faber became deeply rooted in the Chicago blues scene. He spent years touring the country performing in blues houses like Kingston Mines and Wise Fools Pub, playing with legends like Muddy Waters and Lowell George. From there, the evolution of styles began; from a controversial glam rock front man performing to rock festival crowds and an early MTV video release – to returning to R&B blues roots and packing rooms from Chicago to New Orleans. His recent recordings have also been highly acclaimed in the audiophile community nationally and internationally.

Her newest recording is devoted to the music of her mentor, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, which earned a 2024 Bistro Award. “Her vocal style is so warm, compelling and intimate—it’s clear she cares about the words and telling the story, with clarity and without artifice—almost a lost art these days.” –Michael Feinstein MaudHixson.com

This special concert features Trevor McSpadden and Ali Gray, backed by The DL4. Trevor McSpadden and The DL4 will perform many of Merle’s biggest hits and lesser known songs. They capture the spirit of a performer that refused to bend to country music convention and helped create the Bakersfield sound. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Merle Haggard racked up an astounding 38 number one country hits and every major award imaginable. You’ll hear songs like “Mama Tried,” “Okie From Muskogee,” “I’m A Lonesome Fugitive” and many others that continue to inspire new generations of artists and fans alike. Trevor McSpadden worked Central Texas dance halls before perfecting his hard honky-tonk sound in the nightclubs of Chicago. Moving to California in early 2014, Trevor made short work of ingratiating himself to the Golden State. Now based out of Saint Paul, McSpadden’s carefully crafted twang is at home in both beer joints and listening rooms, inspiring audiences to dance and carry on in the time-honored way. Ali Gray and The DL4 will honor Loretta Lynn’s greatest songs; “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “You’re Lookin’ At Country,” “One’s on the Way,” “The Pill,” and many more! Along with a few Conway Twitty duets (featuring Dan Neale) like “After the Fire is Gone” and “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.” Loretta’s life story reads more like fiction than fact. A poorly educated woman from the coal-mining hills of Kentucky, married at age fifteen and a mother at sixteen, she became one of country music’s most popular performers and broke ground for numerous female singers who followed her. Ali Gray has been writing songs and performing in various bands for over 25 years. With 5 studio albums under her belt, Ali continues to release new singles reguarly. When she isn’t writing and recording, you can find her singing full-time in on of her multiple projects: Ali Gray’s Country Jamboree, Ali & Joe, DRUNCH!, Twang Time, Martin Zellar’s Neil Diamond Tribute, Tim Sigler’s All Churched Up, Parrothead Paradise, Two Hicks and a Chick, and Mish Mash.Ali is also a regular guest co-host on the BOB 106 morning show. DL4 is fronted by Dan Lowinger and includes some of the regions best musicians:* Dan Lowinger (guitar) – Since moving to the Twin Cities in 2017, Dan has become a fixture in the local country and Americana scene, playing on a regular basis with all-star Western swing band Honky Tonk Jump, and country rockers Cole Diamond, while also sharing the stage with local greats Martin Zellar (Gear Daddies), Tony Andreason (The Trashmen), Pat Donohue (Prairie Home Companion) and many others! He has performed regionally and toured nationally with many different country and swing bands from the Pacific Northwest including. * Dan Neale (guitar) – Dan is a guitarist who moves easily from blues and country to pop, jazz, and rock. Fingerpicking, flatpicking — he’s got it covered. Back when he was a high school kid in Chattanooga, he began to think about a career in music. He played in the school band and in a group formed by his brother. That led to work with a slew of bar bands and a full-time stint in country rock group called Rawhide. In 1986, he left Tennessee for Minnesota (“I married a woman who hated hot weather,” he says). As a studio player and sideman, he has worked with Martin Zellar, Bobby Vee, and a host of others. * Ken Wilson (Pedal Steel) – A Twin Cities treasure, Ken has played and/or recorded with acts such as Paulette Carlson of Highway 101, John Hermanson and Chris Cunningham of Storyhill, John McAndrew, Becky Schlegel, and Sherwin Linton. * Erik Lillestol (Bass) – Erik is a long-standing freelance Twin Cities bass player, most notably playing the french and gypsy-influenced jazz of the Cafe Accordion Orchestra. * Scott Wenum (Drums) – Scott is a high demand twin cities drummer who plays with Martin Zellar and many others. #gap-287742486 { padding-top: 30px; } #gap-1105592743 { padding-top: 22px; } #image_727349156 { width: 100%; } This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. #col-1972958036 > .col-inner { padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; margin: 0px 0px -21px 0px; } #row-611930636 > .col > .col-inner { padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; } #col-1167755805 > .col-inner { margin: 0px 0px -27px 0px; } #row-968194576 > .col > .col-inner { padding: 0px 0px 15px 0px; }

Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons $6

Classic Country, Rockabilly, Folk, Americana Sherwin, Pam and “The Cotton Kings” celebrate Sherwin’s milestone 85th birthday with a show packed full of Classic Country Songs and Sherwin’s always popular “Tribute To Johnny Cash.” Sherwin Linton Lead Guitar and VocalsPam Linton VocalsNorton Lawellin Keys, Key Bass and VocalsKenny Wilson Steel Guitar, Electric Guitar, Flat Top Guitar and DobroDon Nustad Drums South Dakota native Sherwin Linton launched his career in the music business in 1956 as a 16 year-old disc jockey and live performer of country and rockabilly music on radio station KWAT in Watertown. Moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1957, this talented singer, guitarist and songwriter began performing throughout the country. Sherwin journeyed to Nashville in 1966 and recorded “Cotton King,” a song that catapulted him to the top of the Country charts. Country icon Roy Acuff was so impressed with Sherwin that he signed Sherwin to his legendary Acuff-Rose Publishing Company and Hickory Records, resulting in numerous TV appearances and nationwide tours. Following the 1971 release of a live tribute album, “Hello, I’m Not Johnny Cash,” Sherwin received multiple national nominations from the CMA and ACM (and praise from Cash himself). Subsequent hits included the 1986 novelty song “Santa Got A DWI,” an anti-drunk driving song that hit the charts and became a Christmas favorite (and has sold over 1 million copies). Sherwin continued his prolific recording career in 2011 with the release of a CD “Hillbilly Heaven” pairin him with many Grand Ole Opry and Country Music friends. Sherwin’s latest album is a 43-song double CD set of 19th and early 20th Century songs he learned from his parents. “Sunday Drives With Mom and Dad” received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album of 2023. Sherwin has been a true music ambassador, romanticizing his home state with memories of railroad life and growing up in small South Dakota towns – themes that are woven into the fabric of more than 27 albums and over 68 years of live performances across the U.S. and Canada. “Sherwin Linton has been a great correspondent for Country Music for many years. He is the go-to guy for all things concerning authentic Country Music. In the mid-west, Sherwin is a larger than life Country singing, string bending, rhinestone wearing, boot heel dragging, fancy car driving, cowboy hat wearing state of the art Country Music star if there ever was one. With tight harmonies and precise arrangements, the strength of this duo lies as much in their joyful collaboration as it does their distinct, stylistic differences. In 2022 they released their debut album, Take That Back, on Shifting Paradigm Records. “Joyfully documenting two writers and players deserving much wider recognition, Take That Back is the witty rejoinder to those cynical among us who think all the fun has gone out of jazz. Take that back, indeed!” – Douglas Payne, Sound Insights www.takethatbackjazz.com
